Yes i think you are safe. Communication is the only problem, I advice as soon as you get here get yourself a electronic translator.
Violent crime is quite rare. Firearms are mostly illegal, and China's a very 'controlled' country. Also, you're a foreigner, which also increases the weight of the penalty for any offenders. I think if you ask most foreigners who've lived here for a while, most of them would tell you they feel safer in China than back home.
What you AREN'T safe from, however, is petty crime. Watch out for your handbag, your iphone, your wallet, etc...it's quite common for foreigners in China to get stuff stolen at least once in their time here.
IMHO China is one of the safest country in the world. As zootown said the only thing to fear is the pickpockets and petty thieves, but they are safe compared to LA thieves where I came from. They will run away at first sight like a scared chicken...
Welcome to China and if you make it to Xiamen, welcome to our home-hostel-health center
China is like any other country. It depends on where and when you take that stroll.
Afghanistan is the worst country for a woman to travel alone, followed by the Congo.
That depends. I will not travel alone in a country if I don't know the language~
No matter how saft the country is, there is always enough bad people there to get you into trouble. But if you know the language it helps a lot.
travelling in china at night is safe but depends where are you travelling to. take care is better than some thing unfortunate because of own on hand and decision.. so its better to avoid it alone. there have been cases reported.. so better to avoid it ..
China is safe but u need to be careful on where you goes?avoid cloud ,mind your wallet and mobile phones, dont always go out with your handbag because as soon as they see u as a foreigner with a hand bag, they will be assuming the bag must be filled with dollars.Language barrier is another problem and no one can help you if you cannot explain correctly what you want.
Be ready to Let go any offence caused by a chinese to you because one can spit on you and start laughing instead of saying sorry or step on u.Never expect sorry from any offence giving to u.Accept the chinese no matter how they behaves.
Finally, read their law on foreigners very well and be sure of abiding on them.
Goodluck.
I think it's quite free to travel alone and i love it. It's not a matter of man or woman. But your language. take me with you is a better choice. haha
For a woman traveling in China is far safer than traveling let's say in the Phillipines, Thailand, Middle East or any African Nations where the rape and crime is high among unsuspecting females. Especially those that are near a farm field.
So what you're saying, Mattaya, is that all people with skin darker than the Chinese are rapists? Especially farmers?
"Farmers are rapists" definitely proves you are American, not Chinese.
kchur:
In English, it is spelt "Congo". However, more colloquially, Americans will just call it "The Congo" or "Zaire." Mattaya.
crimochina:
matayayayay give it up. you are clearly not american. each time your finger touches a key it provides evidence of that
I never tried that yet, might be fun. Naaa where would I find womens clothes to fit me, when I can't find any guys clothes to fit me.
I've visted many cities in China alone. I seem to meet people along the way that have been really helpful (i also use my electronic dictionary like its a crackberry) Its helpful to know some basics. As a woman, I've visited about 10 or more cities alone. You just have to be careful, like anywhere in the world, don't look like a naive idiot (a stupid mark) be aware of your surroundings. I'm looked at like I'm crazy when I tell my Chinese friends that I travel alone, I don't really don't understand the paranoia.
I wouldn't suggest travel alone a female at night nor would I suggest that you venture out at night alone in the cities. The street crimes that I have heard of here have been cases where female foreigners have been mugged late at night (say around 01h00) particularly during the holiday season.
Additionally, if you get into a taxi late at night, make sure that you are the only passenger in the car and make sure that that remains that way.
Yes, and be aware of the petty crime -- it is more rife in certain areas of the country than in others. Harbin is particularly bad for pickpocketing as is Guangzhou.
