Yes. North Korea would be brain dead to attack half of their friends in the world, especially the one that feeds them. Literally.

I don't think logic applies when you're talking about NK.

GuilinRaf:

yeah, you are  right.

I just now read that Kim accepted a food package on the condition that he stop the missile launches, and then, launched the missile BEFORE the package arrived.

Logical thing to do would have been to launch the missile AFTER the package was received....

I would imagine the biggest danger to China would be in the event that N. Korea managed to get a nuke onto / into US territory as the retaliation on N. Korea may overspill. Nuclear fallout does that.

Direct attack on China from N. Korea? I don't see it as a threat worth considering unless you are a military strategist of the PLA in which case considering the implausible is your day job.

Is it coincidence that North Korea threatens USA at the same time that China increases it's hostility to it's South China Sea neighbours?

In the last few days, China has fired upon a Vietnamese boat, in Vietnamese waters, for the first time, setting it alight.

China has also entered Malaysian waters for the first time, sending a full military flotilla to "defend' it's claim against Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.

Could North Korea be a distraction?

Hugh.G.Rection:

I really don't believe China has any influence over N. Korea, if they had N. Korea would have started toeing the line prior to or just after the last  UN resolution that China backed.

No, I think the only reason China feeds N. Korea is to keep the N. Korean people in N. Korea. They don't want several million refugees flooding across the border.

Traveler:

It was completely unexpected that China backed that resolution. That could also be part of the smokescreen.

China also introduced new laws a few days ago, imposing greater penalties, including death penalty, for desertion from the military during war.

Then again, they could just be taking advantage of the situation in North Korea.

I think so, as China and North Korea have quiet but very real cultural and political bonds. Despite North Korea's madcap antics, I'm sure they understand the benefit of having a large and threatening big brother.

I'm not sure China would be entirely safe from the counter-attack though.

This is what I was wondering myself too when reading the news about the NK's threats against US. "[...] I found that madness is stupidity" claims a wise King. This is what iti is:arogance and madness, whether playing some war games or being serious at it. It won't benefit anyone in the today's economical turmoil except the one whose business are the weapons. On that purpose, the war has always been the greates deal, again, for a bunch of greedy people. I hope these threats won't unleash any serious consequences but engage in diplomatic approaches between the West and the Asian countries involved in this game. I hope this game is only to prepare the path to diplomatic negociations between PyiongYang and the White House and other military and economical superpowers. I'm speaking out of my little understanding regarding those matters.

china has a habit of attacking when the world is paying attention to something else, attacking vietnam when we had the iran hostage problem , so if something happens in north korea , china would move swiftly on india, taiwan, malaysia, name your country , could be anywhere. distractions are part of the theory , art of war , they wrote the book. that being said if they do, there would be hell to pay this time, these countries are more prepared and know more about tactics than before.

GuilinRaf:

Heck, Vietnam has consistently kicked out invader after invader after invader. I sure as heck would not want to go to war against them.

The Philippines also fought long and hard against the Spanish, the Japanese and the US, so it would behoove certain country to not try to take them over as well.

You should know better than this. Haven't you watched any of the news or found out what was going on with the bordered countries? They get refugees people end up fleeing the country and so forth. If there were an attack all the people on the border of the country that's at war is in trouble. That's why I think China is against it at this point trying to talk them out of making weapons capable of destruction.

The gov't may be the one preparing to re-take N Korea. Maybe that is the plan all along.

The Northern part of the Korean Peninsula was once part of the Han Dynasty.  In todays' world this country sits next door to China's industrial heartland. Beijing is getting a little jittery over the North's sabre rattling.  Having the South sitting on the Yula (with american troops) is not what China would like to see.

Is anyone that has been working in Asia for years so tired of hearing: North Korea, Kim blah blah, Rocket launch, Will North Korea, If North Korea.  God its like a Disney cartoon show thats all based on fiction.. Yes, someday something realistic will happen, but for the next 30 years former NBA star Rodman will handle Kim and the Disney show goes on..
