Q: Is China trying to goad Vietnam into a war?

It seems like they're trying to pick a naval battle they want to happen within five years or so. They want to flex their muscles for all their ridiculuous territorial claims. They can't touch Taiwan, Japan or South Korea, so Vietnam seems a viable option.

I don't think so.  I think it's just about intimidation, and being a bully.
China has never attacked a sovereign nation before, and has not really been to war since Korea.

nevermind:

It attacked Vietnam in the 70s, and India in the 60s. Had a brief exchange with Russia too. I think they are hoping for some actual exchanges in a naval sense.

MissA:

You're forgetting the China-Vietnam war of 1979. China was the aggressor in that one.

cool nevermind i never realized that. i think china does intend to bully it's neighbors and eventually try to move the us out of the region and i think they are building up for that purpose
but china will learn a hard lesson in other countries males are men and they will show china what for

nevermind:

I reckon they would try to keep it to a naval battle with Vietnam. They know engaging Vietnam in a ground war is a bad idea. But, if Vietnam is smart, they'll invade to draw them into such a war. Like the 70s.

Actually, Chinese history books teach Chinese students that China has never attacked Vietnam, but on the contrary, it was Vietnam who tried to invade China.........isn't it funny....

To answer your question, I believe China is trying to show the world she is a superpower, especially military. Now that its navy is building up fast, China would like to test the reaction of its neighbours. The only obstacle to that is the presence of the US navy in the pacific ocean which is ready to shoulder American allies in Asia, mainly South Korea, Japan and the Philippines. What other countries are left to show off China's power : India, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Well forget India, because it's also a nuclear power and can also count on his army, and forces of the Commonwealth. Forget Indonesia and Malaysia, because they are Muslim countries.....if China tries to provoke them, they will have to face as much retaliations from Indonesia and Malaysia, as from any middle-eastern countries (without counting some rebellions by Chinese muslims)
So you just remain with Thailand and Vietnam.....we'll see which one is the target....
Nevertheless, whatever target China chooses, she will suffer economic or military retaliations worldwide.

icerock:

funny? maybe, but if your country surround by severals countries, you have to pay more attention what you do. especially for now chinese want improve our Comprehensive national strength and many country afraid it. what could we do? just because they afraid so china stop the forward step? and don't forget these countries also become stongger.

Also remember, there's going to be a change in leadership soon, so you should expect some sort of posturing going on. It's the same idea as the ban on television programs being 'too entertaining' at the moment...

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
