Q: In China, what is average tax rate for foreign ESL teacher?
My college is offering a gross figure. Not sure what my net would be....

So, if you are eligible to be taxed, how to make sure the correct rate for your income bracket ? Here are several steps.
1. Firstly, you should figure out your monthly income before taxed, and then subtract 4,800 RMB from it. (monthly income - 4,800 = taxable income)

Calculating your tax rate
Foreign teachers in China tend to earn between 5000 and 16,000 RMB per month. If your school has quoted your gross salary (before tax), you can use the calculation below to find out how much you will take home each month:
Monthly income – 3,000 RMB = Monthly Taxable Income
Monthly Taxable Income x Tax Rate – Quick Deduction = Tax Payable
Here are some examples:
Gross Salary: 7000 RMB
7,000 – 3,000 = 4,000
4,000 x 0.10 – 210 = 190
7,000 – 190 = 6,810
Net Salary: 6,810 RMB
Gross Salary: 10,000 RMB
10,000 – 3,000 = 4,000
4,000 x 0.10 – 210 = 490
10,000 – 490 = 9,510
Net Salary: 9,510 RMB
Gross Salary: 16,000 RMB
16,000 – 3,000 = 13,000
13,000 x 0.20 – 1,410 = 1,190
16,000 – 1,190 = 14,810

Use a tax calculator. I find this one to be pretty accurate.

Usually they give you some tax free allowances in addition to a relatively small salary so tax is peanuts.

My problem in China wasn't peanuts salary, but disrespect of the contract terms by the employer ... and I've always worked at Public schools.

I completely understand. You must have missed the contract item that said foreigners should leave their self-respect, dignity and ethical bias at the door.

You might don't know, but am the "Call-the-SAFEA-Often" guy ...
SAFEA was Chinese gov. org. (Foreign Expert Bureau), which approved Working permit for laowai teacher ...
Contract was always respected to the 't' ... after my buzz to SAFEA ...
I call them at every school I had worked in Chino ...
They dismantled that org. after 2017 Labour law changes ... in other words, there is no one to call now ... and complain.
