Q: Chinese and heat / open windows

I know my GF got really sick with bad colds the last few months. I thought her apartment was just cold. But now that I am here to experience how people live, I am having a hard time understanding it. The doors and windows on any building I've seen fit like S**8, no way they can keep air out, yet I watch my GF sit with a little heater while wearing a coat and have windows wide open at each end of the apartment. There is no way you can heat an apartment or yourself with windows open. I've tried to tell her she gets sick because of the cold drafts. I see others like this also. She comes to my apartment and fully opens the patio door because she thinks she needs freah air. No I didn't let one go, the apartment smells OK, so why sit in a cold drafty room when you can barely heat the room. Another bitch,, sh8 heaters. I've had a cold for 2 weeks now and haven't had one in years. I'm Canadian too. So why do the Chinese live like this?

TED :

You are not the only one facing this.  And it is not on thing, but a combination of the way many were  raised, and thwe beliefs they sucked  from their mothers.

First, poor fitting windows.  Trust me, when new they fit, but poor workmanship and materials allows sagging to occur with usage and time.  But from babies they are mentally trained to accept what they have, do not complain too much because nothing will be achieved anyway.

Open windows during winter time.  They do this because in their minds they are sure that if they close all windows within a home or apartment, and go to sleep, for example, they will die in their sleep because of the lack of oxigen.  So much air inside apartment, you are breathing all the time using oxigen and releasing CO2, eventually you will die.  So, windows must be opened to allow new air, oxigen rich, to come in.  And damn the cold weather, put some more layers on.

And lack of a heating system.  It is now begining to catch on, some homes already have.  But here another thing enters into the equation, for them electricity is expensive here, no gas heating, and it is cheaper to wear 3 or 4 jackets and sweaters than to keep the apartment at 25 C during winter time.  And yes, some use those small (looking like a small fan) heaters to get some warmth, since they are small they do not cost much to run (their thinking).

If it is of any consolation for you, my GF at my home wears at least 4 pairs between pants and underwear besides panties, and on top maybe from 2 to 3 long sleeve underwear, a blouse, a sweater, one or two jackets, and my long overcoat that kept me warm in winters around Buffalo, New York.  And outside now is 14 C.
