Q: Chinese authors worth reading?

I'm trying to improve my Chinese and get a better perspective on modern Chinese literature. Basically, I'm interested in reading something that's not a news report or blog posting for a change, as I personally find a lot of that style of writing to be really boring.

Can anyone recommend an interesting Chinese author or a good book to read (preferably in Chinese, but translated volumes are okay too).

Thanks!

Luo Guanzhong is one of the greatest authors in the history of the Chinese literature......Luo Guanzhong is confirmed to have lived in the end of Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty by the record of his contemporary....His works include Pingyao Zhuan (平妖传) which is a ghost story attributed to Luo Guanzhong with 20 chapters.........also some romantic stories like the Three Kingdom and Water Margin......and many many more of his fine work are consider one of the greatest of all time

I'm in full agreement, but it's so difficult to read. According to a friend, the written vernacular is incredibly difficult for even educated Chinese. I picked up some old Chinese books and pretty much died instantly. I think it was journey to the west... I could barely understand anything. Not sure who wrote that, but I think I heard the other works are also as difficult.

I really would like to recommend << Ordinary World>>(平凡的世界),  which wins the third Mao Dun Prize. The author is Lu Yao, who is the great author in many many many reader eyes. It is so good, believe me.
