I understand the beeping, mostly scooters, usually I use mirrors to know where other vehicles are, with beeping I know where they are, I see them spatially in my mind.

Scandinavian:

the beeping does jack, because you don't know if the beep is for you or another car, it is a pointless gesture

I had a two hour taxi ride with a driver from hell today.

He could use his horn, he could use his mirrors, he was an expert at braking and his swerving skills were second to none.

But could he drop a gear when overtaking?  Not a chance. I lost count of how often he was trying to overtake on the wrong side of the road, the car engine labouring in 5th gear as a loaded bus was bearing down towards us. His solution... brake, veer right, forcing all traffic to take evasive action.

It's a pity he can't use his gearstick as well as his horn button yes.

Lord_hanson:

Taxi drivers are terrible for that. They know that higher gears are slightly more fuel efficient so try to get to 5th gear as soon as possible. Most are in 5th while still going 20kph which is just stupid. I guess they are willing to sacrifice the car operating properly in exchange for saving 4rmb a day.

Yup Lord Hanson.

But one thing is for sure. If I ever buy a car here it will be a VW Santanna. Those things are like tanks

You don't save anything lugging in a higher gear, accelating is worse.
