Q: Chinese guys beating on Chinese girls... at the gym?

Yup, it happened today.

Random ass China strikes again! Got up and went to the gym, met up with my Polish training partner and we went to work. Finished up and went down stairs to hand in our keys and go to lunch. Whoops! I forgot my key in the locker room.

I go back up to get it and come down stairs and I see one of the male (like punk metro-sexual looking guy, about 24-25 years old) screaming at one of the female staff. He charges towards her (his back to me) and I instinctively know he is about to attack her...

So I start moving quickly towards him. He tries to do one of those lame run jump-kicks and half connects with her. Obviously not happy (cause the little child didn't have his fill) he starts swinging on her... another male staff puts himself in front of the girl and tries to push the other guy off... with about as little effort as possible (but hey, at least he DID something).

I reach them, and he is still trying to swing on her... I have a momentary thought flash... "Do I knock this guy out cold or do I just give him a good push away..." I guess I settled for the middle ground cause I half punched him in the chest and he flew backwards... I yelled at him, "Come on! Ni da nu ren ma (you hit girls)?" And I was hoping he would swing on me... but as I thought... he looked pissed for about 3 seconds then walked into some back room...

Was a little disappointed he didn't swing on me. I half expected both the male staff to turn on me (you know how they do in China) but they didn't...

I asked the girl "What happened, why was he hitting you?" She said she didn't know... she just looked very upset and embarrassed. We stood around there for a few minutes to make sure tough man Zhou had enough time to cool down and not try to strike her again.

I called my buddy who knows the boss of the gym and told them to fire his ass... he is fighting with women in front of customers. Plus, I don't want to see him every time I come to workout. I asked the girl if she was okay... she said she was... I told her in Canada, most men don't beat women. Can you imagine if a guy starting beating on a girl at a gym in Canada?

And that was my eventful day at the gym.

Why do I always see this crap? Last time it was a cop trying to beat up another cop in the police station. These immature emotion children need to grow up.

So, you ever run into a situation like this? Did you do something or did you just watch? I can't just watch a dude trying to beat down a girl. Well, my respect for Chinese men took a bigger hit today... I know it's not all of them but it just seems like WAY TOO MANY.

I'm in China for last 8 months, and I've seen only one physical assault (the guy slapped the girl twice) on a road, it was between a man and woman (my friend didn't let me intervene - she said "it's none of your business")... also I read about fights on lot of forums, I've noticed its always/mostly between "man vs woman" - I don't know why that is?

Well, if I was in this situation... I would have probably reacted the same way... well...except when you spoke Chinese...

RachelDiD:

It's not always man vs women. It can also be when 7 Chinese guys gang up on one. Yeah, this culture just commands respect.

Robk:

Yeah, he wasn't slapping her. He was trying to beat her up. I can't stand there and watch that sort of thing...

It makes me too angry to see people picking on weaker people. To me, men like this are total scum they need to know it.

I know the whole "don't intervene" thing... but he was attacking her in MY GYM. I don't want to go to the gym everyday and see that crap, know what I mean?

I am not suprised at the title of the question but the guy(other than you) who tried to intervene.

You did a good job and could have been great had you taken the crap out of his arse.

Robk:

He was a co-worker... and he did try to stop the guy, sort of... but it wasn't doing anything. The guy was still hitting the girl... the punk needed a hard enough whack to knock him out of his little boy temper tantrum.

I recall seeing a couple of fights, but none involved women/girls.

Last one was at HongQiao railway station... yeah IN the station! It was amusing! Those silly half-flying kicks.... and random swinging of arms.

Some others broke it up.

I've never been in a serious fight (only a couple of swing things), but if anyone tried one of those silly kicks, they'd soon find out why they're so damn useless...

But on TV those kicks split Japanese soldiers in 2 :)

It is duty to intervene and glad you did so. But i hate all the sweeping generalizations that sweep about the forum. To say that this one incident causes you to lose respect for all Chinese men its a bit much is it not?

The other day I saw a video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JsJcKy7nKQ. He rescued a child from a great height. Does this improve your opinion of all chinese men?

Ditto you for being man enough to deal with this horrible man. But we cannot claim abuse of females is unique to china. Not if we claim to be open minded foreigners with no anti chinese agenda. The hard truth is women are safer here than in most western countries

Robk:

I know there are some good ones... it just seems like 70-90% are garbage.

And I do respect a good one when I meet them but this wasn't just ONE incident. I have seen lots of men trying to beat on women... men attacking each other like wild animals in the places you would least expect... doing cowardly things.

I once saw a young guy attack a street vendor and then trash her stall... it was an old lady... I was too far away to help in time but... wth? That's what I am talking about. Kudos to the good ones though!

I've seen more girls hit guys in China or attack other girls. I've personally only seen a guy hitting a girl in China once. It was in my old apartment compound when a grown woman slapped a guys little son and then he retaliated by slapping her.

Howveer I've seen on at least 10 occasions girls hitting guys or girls hitting girls.

Once there was a catfight, it got really brutal with 2 girls attacking one girl. The 2 girls will pulling out her hair, slamming her head against the sidewalk, me and a foreign friend intervened and stopped the catfight. Next day another foreign friends police officer friend shows him a video of the assault and was asking if he knew us. We were getting the blame for protecting that poor girl.

I am never going to intervene again unless if someone nearly kills someone (like this incident)

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
