Q: Chinese internet isn't just slow, its inconsistent
The slow internet in China doesn't make me lose my mind, it's how inconsistent it is.
Sometimes I can get on any site not blocked in China. Reddit, tubmlr, music blogs I frequent without any problems. But then, all of a sudden I can't. This will last for two or three weeks, and then I can get on them again. Sometimes my VPN works fine, sometimes it doesn't.
Chinese sites always work without any problems.
Why???
Because too many people are using the net all at once, thats why my torrents download perfectly at night when people are a sleep.
I get soooooo pissed off when I have a full bar of China mobile 4G and I can't load ESPN.com just to check an NBA playoff game. ( Guess Golden State isn't feeling.) Took me 20 minutes to get it loading.

The speed is inconsistent as well. I'm also an NBA fan and I have the package that lets me stream all the games as well as Hulu plus.
But it's hard to get either of these to stay at one quality level. The speed will pick up and it'll switch to the 1080P stream only to have it drop off and stutter back down to pixelated, stuttering garbage. But if would just stay at a conservative 480 or 720 it would look perfectly decent and would buffer enough that it would never drop down.
The solution was to change the resolution on the apple TV and the Playstation that hosts the nba/hulu apps. If it's limited to 480 or 720 as an output it won't try and get away with the 1080p stream during the few minutes that the network will handle it.
God I can't wait to not have to screw around with SmartDNS servers and multiple devices just to watch TV/sports.

btw, if you have the discipline to avoid the scores all day, the nba package lets you pick form the days games from a special portal that hides the scores.
So when I get home from the office I can throw on a game that ended a few hrs before and watch it with all the time outs and breaks edited out.
For example that Golden State game where steph started feeling it late.
This is the first season i've had it, it's worth it to me if you're a fan

Good question. I've often wondered the same thing. Even though I cant get on some Aust. sites sometimes, e.g. I can always get onto Echina. cities real fast! WTF!
And its not only time of day, its a regular occurance..can anybody expain why???

The great firewall seems to be very fluid. I could not get into ecc this morning. Sometimes I can get BBC news, sometimes I can't. Sometimes my news apps update over the mobile network, at other times they will only update over wifi, if at all.
