Q: Chinese lingerie - why are granny panties so popular here?
I don't get the granny panty fetish women seem to have here. I've seen shops selling sexy lingerie, why don't women aim to please here?

Maybe you are running with the wrong group. While older woman rather use "granny" types, many city dwellers use sexier types, while the ones just arriving from countryside will still have the ones normally used at home. Just look at the ones hanging to dry from balconies, and you will see many sexy ones in display.
My GF and my 13 years old stepdaughter do use real sexy and nice ones. In fact, they both use same size, so sometimes it is hard to know who used what last. One type they will not use is the "G" string one, they claim it is too uncomfortable for them? But other than that, they do choose ones with pretty lace, and of course, mostly either red, black or purple, their favorite colors.
If you must, suggest buy a present for that particular lady that disappoints you, and get a couple of the ones you like and enjoy and give them to her. Maybe she will get the hint then.
I haven't seen any granny panties. I have seen G-strings. I agree with HappyExPat. Buy her some nice lingere or panties. They make a nice present.
