Q: Is a Chinese marriage certificate equivalent to an American marriage license?

It has to be, in the sense that the marriage is legal.
Mind you, I'm no expert on what goes on in the USA. I do know that different states have different laws, and I would presume that applies to marriages also.
But as far as if you get married in China does that mean you are married in the US is concerned, surely the answer is yes.
Why do you ask....are you considering stepping off the deep end?
If so, then I suggest you take a big, deep breath...and jump!
Yes, it is if you are requested to show it. In USA they will not know you were married abroad unless you tell them.

Yeah, he's right, you could marry all over the whole world from A to Z, so Of course Z = the U.S... You need to get married in the U.S or in Las Vegas if you want a legal marriage in the U.S...
