Q: Chinese produced cheese

With all the milk issues they had, is it safe to consume Chinese-made cheese? Chinese will say yes, but me always afraid it's poor quality, cheap and sanitary control is not on par with 'Merica quality standards.

Anyone ever visited a cheese factory? Should I stick on exported cheese? Halp?

It depends on whether you buy factory produced cheese or farmhouse cheese. There's an artisan French cheesemaker in Beijing who makes good quality cheese. Also, Yellow Valley Chesses from Shanxi are good and the milk comes from their own organic farm. Other Chinese cheeses like Beijing cheddar or the cheese slices are inferior quality in my opinion and best left rotting on the shelves. In terms of food safety, all these cheeses are pasteurised so you don't have to be afraid of getting food poisoning. You're much more likely to catch salmonella from some of the egg dishes you get here...

Why would you want to eat it?

It is horrible and tasteless.

I agree with the comments. Despite there being an increasing presence of Chinese made cheese, they still have a long way to go before they even come near mastering it. My prediction for the future is that they will discover the perks of making imitation cheese using hydrogenate oil: it's lactose free and can be cheaply mass produced. The fact that it's totally unhealthy and probably causes cancer (same debate as eating margarine vs. butter) won't be a deterrent here, since it'll be covered anyway.

I quite like the Tibetan sour cheese braids, although I must admit, it's an acquired taste. When I first tried it, I tried hard not to spit it out because it looked and felt like braided mozarella but tasted like rancid milk. After a while though, I did come to like it.

Most of the semi-soft cheeses, the "breakfast" cheeses, etc., and the gouda-like cheeses are produced by the numerous dairy farms of Shandong Province, which is  for all intents and purposes, the true home of the dairy industry in  China.

The milk scare has now long passed and I find Chinese cheeses and Chinese yoghurt to be quite good.  Indeed, Metro and all the major supermarkets carry imported brands of cheeses and surprisingly enough, they are usually priced about the same as their domestic counterparts.
