Q: Chinese reaction to Olympic Games 2012

I have heard a lot of negative opinions from Chinese about the fact they were not top of the medal table in the London Olympics. Chinasmack is full of it and I have heard similar views from other Chinese including my own wife who on the one hand was accusing the west of being out to get China and on the other assured me that Chinese athletes do not take performance enhancing drugs, they just get medicine for bad colds from the coach. We all know that every country uses various drugs and that some judges calls at every Olympics are going to be debatable, but come on this is making China sound like a lot of spoilt kids who didn't get what they wanted and so are having a major tantrum. Come to think of it that does sound like some Chinese I know, but really what are your thoughts on this?

China has a big problem about being first. If you win one major sporting event you are expected to win every time.  Two good examples are:

Liu Xiang - Great athlete. Won gold in Athens for the hurdles. But is expected to win every time he runs.

Li Na - Won a tennis grand slam. she hasnt won a grand slam since her win and people are pissed cause she cannot do it again.

The expactation is the same with the London games they came first in the medal tally in Beijing people had high hopes of doing this again but it didnt happen and now they are pissed. Using excuses such as the media where out to get us, officials made the wrong call, people saying we are drug cheats. But man up so what you came second in the medal tally some countries would be happy if they get one bronze medal.

Totally agree Brisguy, they should learn to accept other athletes are as good and in some cases better than they are. I know what you mean about the coming first attitude, we see it everywhere in individuals on the street so at the level of world class sports it must be unbelievably ingrained. I have just watched the closing ceremony and asked my wife if she wanted to see it, she did watch the opening one, but the answer was no. I guess there is nothing in that to glorify the middle kingdom. I did enjoy mixing it a little at English corner on Sunday when I said to some of them that due to Great Britain doing so well in the medal table this time they were going to overtake China in Rio. You should have seen some of their faces, some got the point that I was joking, but some really took it serious. It was a hoot just seeing the reactions.

Russia almost overtook China after a strong showing in Athletics to close the games. That battle may be interesting to watch in Rio.

If those comments on Chinasmack are A. Translated accurately and B. an accurate reflection of Chinese opinion then there are just as many bigoted idiots out there as there are in here!

FFS, the umpires were all biased and were selected by the LOCOG to ensure Britain got third place, was the theme of several comments, well I wonder how they managed to teach so many goldfish to type! The umpires are all selected by the INTERNATIONAL governing body of that particular sport and verified by the Olympic Committee nothing to do with LOCOG! Also if of course LOCOG could have fixed it why settle for third? Why not first?

It's amusing because as the games progressed my students and family would be tuned into the badminton and ping pong religiously....however at the start of the 2nd week, I would go to visit the in-laws and the TV would be switched to some soap opera. Not a word was spoken of the ongoing games. It was as if they didn't even exist. (Tumbleweeds)

Now, honestly, I'm not a big fan of the Olympics but it is sports, (even though a few of the sports are bordering on nothing more than shear entertainment or a pastime) even so I am interested in watching that as opposed to the stuff they regularly watch on TV. As a Canadian, we have accepted our place in the summer games but nevertheless I do enjoy checking out some of the events.

When the Americans took over, the Chinese took a hike. Rather than saying, "They are good athletes at basketball or track", They instead chose the more familiar route by saying, "I'm not interested in the Olympics"

tomcatflyer:

Good point although to be fair I think when they said they were not interested  in the Olympics was probably true. Most Chinese I have talked to are only really interested in seeing Chinese people get medals, especially gold as it reinforces their brainwashing that says China is best. They don't watch it for enjoyment of the sports, of course this attitude has not been helped by the tv coverage I have seen of it. Only really covering events where Chinese are taking part and even when another country takes gold they concentrate on talking to their own sports-person who may have "only" taken bronze.  So as I say when they said they were not interested in the Olympics this was probably very close to the truth.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
