Q: is Chinese TV-drama ever exported?

Did any of you ever see any Chinese TV-dramas on TV in your home country ? It seems to me the stuff on tv during primetime here in China is very sub-standard, same story every time (it is either boy and girl relationship + famlily intrigue or it is some historical stuff that has been twisted to make the hero look extra heroic)

I think , Scandinavian, that you have answered your own question. Your summary of Chinese tv is exactly what I see and why I do not watch tv here. Who on earth outside of China would want to watch such pap. Also the "quality" of the domestic product here probably explains why American tv programs are popular here.

I can't see why it could possibly be exported to developed countries. We're spoiled. Chinese shows are filled with talking heads, sapping music, too much crying and other stuff that is unlikely to catch on with foreign audiences. Not to mention crap production values.

Nessquick:

crying - I do not remember any other movie or series, when the men was crying for some reason. only in saturday we did a small loop over channels with my wife, and discovered 3 different programs where just was some man crying for someones die or his Gf leaving or so. terrible :(

giadrosich:

Don't get me started on the crying! By both men and women. My wife likes to watch these "dramas," and in every one of them, some person (men, women and children) spends at least 10 minutes crying!

It wears me out listening to it!! However, I've learned to deal with it like this:  broken heart

My wife used to get DVD / Drama series sent to her (from Hong Kong) when we were in the UK, and tbh, leaving out the quality I don't think the average UK TV viewer has the patience.  From what I could work out most series were about 300 - 400 1 hour shows!

Scandinavian:

I think this is one of the points where Mainland and HK differs. The mainland shows as far as I can tell are in the range 30-60 episodes of torture.

I think you guys have been away from home too long, you North Americans, anyway. Casual racism which is not sardonic or detached in any way, constant dark hateful retard jokes and a general disdain for the disabled, etc. There's no way in hell they'd let that on North American TV. All the stuff that's just normal Chinese TV stuff is, like, dark edgy HBO stuff here, and they have to strain to show that they're just really hip and don't mean it.
