Thinking to try to take my Chinese GF to visit my home this coming summer.
Not sure which way to go for visa - through police or tourist agent?
Does anyone have experience with this?
It's Eastern Europe (Bulgaria). Not many Chinese people are dying to move there,
so I'm not sure if it would be a big hassle, time consuming etc...

First, forgive me, but don't underrate Bulgaria. It's known to all, that is for sure, but Sofia is a jewel of a city, a real jewel of a city, and you have never visited an Orthodox Church until you have seen the 10:00 liturgy with the Patriarch at Alexander Nevksy Cathedral. Next, the Coast is just gorgeous, truly gorgeous, and it should be seen before it has become completely overrun.
I once spent an Orthodox Good Friday in Sofia and the services and the women in black and the chanting -- I am still moved by it. And Bulgarian cooking is not known to many but truly it's a great melting pot of national cooking, Turkish cooking, Greek cooking, Russian influence. And I don't drink but there are some really great Bulgarian wines, too.
Your girlfriend will need a visa for Bulgaria, particularly since, I think, it has signed the Shenken Agreements (let everyone in, keep everyone else out). She (meaning you with her) should apply through the Bulgarian Embassy in Beijing. Call them please to find out their exact requirements. Visas to Europe for solo Chinese travellers are not the easiest thing in the world.
Please give the process at least two - three weeks even though it will be done quicker. If you are in Shanghai or near Shanghai, believe it or not, there is also a Bulgarian Consulate in Shanghai.
Also particularly during the summer season, you can get really, really cheap tickets on either Aeroflot (Shanghai - Moscow - Sofia return) or (Beijing - Moscow - Sofia return). Even cheaper, the Ukrainian Airlines probably offers the best bargains to Sofia from China, believe it or not.
