Q: clothing size in china! >:(

Is it just me or is any old random Number stuck onto the size of clothing here, even within the same shop one size will not match the another pant or shirt (different style)of same size . I recently bought several items, admittedly with out trying them on because i believed the label, silly me removed the tags and now i have to throw out loads of good clothing other than the fact that its not the right size. I would say lesson learned but when it comes to clothing I am rather clueless and will most likely repeat this mistake in the future, also....eh...its chinas fault.

for some reason, clothes are sized to your height here for many items, as to whether your fat or thin at your height, that's really not important.

fada:

I'm guessing tailor made is the way to go.

I always go one size bigger than I am. I'm M, but I usually buy L, especially shirts. I like to jump into Nanjing GAP, and I always get L, which is M elsewhere.

But, I mostly save such shopings for HK, where M always matches me.

Why throw away? I'm sure you saved fapiaos (same as I never do!). Return to the shop, and exchange it.

With the tags off, they are as good as rags with regards to returns

If you really have loads of too small clothes, you can at least try to exchange it. Bring tags with clothes to the store.

'Add-it': 'I had custom shirts done in Silk Market or Road in Shanghai once. Tailor took 77 different measures for the shirts, and they were all made to small. Too short sleeves. It wasn't that expensive, (some 100 Rmb/shirt or even cheaper), so I just put them on the top of garbage container outside, and forget about it. Don't ask about hand made shoes in Silk Road. Two pairs, both too small after million fittings. I rarely buy clothes in China. My ex-Chinese GF always said: 'I don't trust Chinese hands'.

yes, looking forward to seeing my tailor in Hong Kong again, the fast train from qingdao to guangzhou is supposed to be finished all the way to hong kong this summer, finally i get a tailored shirt without pockets and cuff links that will fit like its supposed to fit. beijing tailors write no pockets on shirt and then i get shirts with pockets or cufflink shirt has buttons on the sleeve. i gave up on beijing.

Hotwater:

Don't bet on that high speed train to Hong Kong yet! It keeps getting delayed. One site says 2017. Wikipedia says 2018!

I have an explanation for this.

From 1980 onward, most of the clothing worldwide is or was until recently made in China, still today what ends up on the Chinese market are the products with a small defect that were originally destined to other markets.

The size tagged on it can follow standards from the US, Europe or even Nigeria. There is no regulation in China when it comes to clothing sizes. The best is to try it on and see.

That's why although I order lots of shit on Taobao and JD I will never order clothes because you can't try it on and see yourself in it before buying, even with size charts you can never know what to expect and returning it is a hassle.

Some rare brand name shops follow standards, such as Uniqlo from Japan that follows Japanese sizes chart for all its items here in China, and some local brands as well such as Sept Wolves or 361 (the sportswear brand), but most shops will just sell anything they get their hands on and most brands will sell here what can't be sold overseas.

hi2u:

You can't make that generalization that clothes sold in China are from the reject pile from other markets. Many are made in the same factories after the quota for other markets are fulfilled and they're just made from cheaper materials but using the same presets on the machines.

A timely question. I have just been doing the Taobao thing looking for new shirts for work.

Sizes for shirts are complicated. You can buy shirts based upon chest size and back/shoulder size and neck size. These 2 criteria don't appear to be connected in any way. If you buy based upon shoulder width the chest size is comparable to a sparrow and conversely if you buy based upon chest size the shoulder width is about the same as a coat hanger. Forget neck size.

Easy, either:

1.- Do not buy unless tried on and fits.

2.- If buying on websites, take your measurements and select size accordinly.

I always do that, and avoid problems

fada:

I've honestly tried on clothes in the store before and think they fit so i buy them and get home and try them on there and realise they dont fit. Is some kind of marketing voodoo at play in the store or i am just a little bit rain man with out the super powers?

Unless article tried on and fitting at store switched by clerk or at register should fit at home.

If not, either you eat too much on your way back home, or you did not tried them on properly

I can't fit clothes in China, unless I buy the super fat-bastard stuff on Taobao. Depending on the day, I am between 203 and 205 centimeters.

So I need to buy 6-7 XL. That means XXXXXXL, to XXXXXXXL. cool
