I just got a jacket, a reversible jacket... one side is Atlanta Braves fan, the other is NY Yankees ,,,,,,,, get caught wearing this in Atlanta or New York and what might happen? it is hilarious and I will wear it.
actually the fact that atlanta has been competitive with new york in baseball despite new york's much higher salaries for players and management, says volumes about the how great the team really is, point of bias, im from atlanta.

What would happen? Probably nothing.
Wearing Yankees stuff and being a Yankee fan is a lot like being a fan of Microsoft or Standard Oil. Really successful, but they spend more than any other team in a league without a salary cap so that's why. Say you're team has got a player who've you watched enter the league the with your team and over time he becomes really successful. Eventually his contract will be up and he'll either sign with the Yankee's or you'll end up over paying to keep him because of the Yankees. That said, watching them lose in the playoffs is fantastic. Its strange though, while most will root against them in the play offs they are sort of the default teams in areas where no other professional team is available. They are baseball's Manchester United (?), New Zealand All Blacks, or Montreal Canadiens (Although lets be honest, 24 stanley cups but 1 in the last quarter century, c'mon it should be the Red Wings for the NHL). So yeah, fuck the Yankees.
Atlanta on the other hand is the South's team, which means they are though of as America's team by the people who live there. You used to be able to watch them everywhere because they were owned by Ted Turner, who owns CNN and a bunch of other networks in the US. The Yankees have their own TV network, the YES network, but its really only available in a few places. Where the Yankees buy consistent success, the Braves spend a lot less and are able to compete as regularly. Not rival, mind you, but compete. In fact, they are fantastic choke artists. Where watching the Yankees lose the World Series is a joy, watching Atlanta lose is more or less expected. Were it not for the Buffalo Bills in the NFL the would be the go to for choking at the last second. But that said they are just successful enough to keep from being loved, but not successful enough to win very many championships.
Also, but strangely not because they are from the south, there is sort of a racism angle to the Braves. Part of it has to do with the name and this thing called the "tomahawk chop" which they do in the stands. Imagine watching an English Rugby match and instead of the whole crowd sing "Swing Low Sweet Chariot"--and on that one, seriously WTF. How on earth does an American Spiritual get taken up by that team--the crowd did something cringe inducingly racist. The other part has to do with a guy named John Rocker who is practically a stereotype himself.
