Q: Company "needs" to apply for my FEC in another city because that's where the HQ is?

Does this make sense?  Is it legit?

Or should I tell these guys to f#%k off?  It's METEN English in Nanjing.

They also claim that they have to do my visa is Suzhou, because that's where they're headquartered.

I'm not sure. Your FEC is tied to your School, in other words 'you can work legally only at your School'.

I'm not sure, how that works, if School have many other Schools around Nanjing.

I usually work at Public Schools, so I've never experienced similar thing.

In 2011, Helen in Hangzhou sponsored my Z in HK. Contract was with School in Yingkou, Liaoning.

After my return to China, we got FEC in Yingkou FEB, where I was working.

I would ask FEB about that. They will tell first hand rules, and if anything is shady.

Dial FEB (SAFEA) and ask them about.

At FEB, ask them for advice like 'I'm not really sure, if that's OK, and so on…Can you help me, please!'

Just be extremely nice, and they will advice you right!

Enter 'SAFEA' upstairs in search. There are 4 pages on the web link. Just look for Nanjing. There's ph. no. and address. Call them first, and if 'no go', then go there in person.

'strictly speaking' working in a city other than where your FEB is registered, is illegal. Aldo, having an RP for a different city, and visa. Also, if a company says that it is 'in the process' of getting the certification to do all of that at a local branch, THAT BRANCH IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO HIRE FOREIGNERS.

Nope, the FEC should be arranged in the district that you work and live in. Undoubtedly though, they will utilize a bit of "guanxi" in Suzhou to make it happen. The difficulty from your perspective is the risk that they might ask you to up sticks and move out to Suzhou if required.

icnif77:

I was thinking the same. They show apartment and School in nice city at first.

Then, after 2 weeks work 'oooh, we need teacher in 'not so nice city, apartment, school.....'

Sorry to say that some eyebrows will be raised and questions asked when you register your residence at the local police station. Previously, I worked in an adjacent town but didn't live there. The commute was fast and easy and the rent was substantially lower where I was. The local police contacted the police near my workplace and they would drop by every few months to say Hi and check my RP and registration.

Nuts.  Thanks.

That is illegal. Look at it this way, they get fined and you get deported.

I thought as much.   Will head down to the FEB in the morning to verify.

icnif77:

Call them first!

This is address and ph. no. of Province Headquarters. They will ask you for your name, and in which School are you working at. Then, they will call 'local' SAFEA (close to your School), which will step into action if necessary. 'ming' or 'no ming'?

I also had a job offer from Meten, they told me the same story here in Shenzhen, the Visa is done in Suzhou. So they pay the PSB to turn the other Cheek.

ScotsAlan:

I doubt very much that they pay the PSB. I think it's more likely that the PSB have bigger fish to fry and can't be arsed .

Well, you gotta see it to believe it, right Scott? Funny thing was I once taught at meten as PT teacher, 2011 October came around and the PSB walks in for checks, and we were like Oh no. But they didn't care about us after walking out of the HR department, we were told they were paid to leave, Scott didn't you know that's the name of the game here, catch snd release with a price? Do you really think they want to fine and deport foreigners from the top 5 countries for being a PT teacher? Noooo, it's the collection style here, its the turn the cheek fee, whatever you wanna call it.. That was a lucky for me and I resigned as a PT same evening.

i have fec and psb visa in jinan, but work in several cities in shandong for my company located in jinan, i always go the local city police station and show my documents and the contract between my company in jinan and the local international high school program, technically if your not in a foreign authorized hotel, you have to tell local police anywhere in china that you sleep by law. i have had no trouble for 2 years so far.

ironman510:

Agreed, especially these, hi PSB I'm back from shopping in HK.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
