Q: Confronting racism in yourself

I'm not talking about the institutionalised bullshit that goes on here. I'm talking about the huge mass of westerners who have recieved a decent education by all accounts and continue to spout pure vile on this site because of their inability to accept reality. The reality being, this aint kansas

If the natives are racist then so be it, but  I recieved an education that lets me make up my own mind and not judge everyone for the actions of the rest, i would have assumed everyone else here did too, but apparently not.

So come on, call me an apologist, call me chinese(some people use that as an insult), but the truth remains that if you can't rise above the minority of native crap that gets spouted then that makes you exactly what you hate.

And that's what you most likely are, a stupid racist.

Example: "some stupid fuck did something fucking retarded to me today" ← not racist

"Some stupid chinese fuck did something fucking retarded to me today because he is chinese" ← racist

A little positivity mixed in with the racism will at least make it more palatable if your gonna insist on forcing eyeballs to read your drivel.

End of rant.

edit to add this is very much a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Asian is a race, Chinese is a nationality.

icnif77:

I'm confused. What is the real difference in your reply? Didn't you understand OP's Q entirely, because of the mistake in proper Englo word-s classification? Do you want to 'preach' proper English, or you think statement 'I dislike/hate Chinks?' isn't racist, because Chinese are nation, and not race?

I call that 'diverting', instead answering the Q with arguments.angel, buTT...I'm Non-naive 'still learning English' speaker.

Everyone knows that Chinese is a nationality. We have Caucasian , Asian, and African. China is in Asia ergo they are Asian. Chinese get taught all crazy stuff that they are different. Makes me chuckle. It's up there with their stomach is different, etc,

If you want to be correct, Asia is a continent (where people of multiple live). Asian is as much a valid description of race as European, or North American.

I can say "yet another Chinese bastard tried to con me today" without feeling racist. The reason for that is that I've had no problems with Japanese or Hong Kongers.

Maybe I should use a qualifier like "Mainland Chinese", because I know that their civilizational deficit is a result of their educational and cultural conditioning rather than their genetics.

Racism is the belief that one group of people is inherently superior to another. We can quibble about the definition of this, but I'm of the view that science has completely refuted the claims of racists.

Of course there are elements in a society who want racism to continue to exist so they can get their noses into the taxpayer trough whilst sitting on their arses with fellow troughing consultants, and perhaps even getting together for a big circle jerk where they discuss how enlightened they are compared with the rest of the hoi polloi who they're trying to save from themselves.

Practically commies. And commies killed more people than the fascists because they were equal opportunities mass murderers who didn't discriminate.

Englteachted:

No need for a qualifier. Because anyone with a brain understands clearly. Especially HKers.

What's with the excessive use of the word "lads"? Where are you pretending to be from anyway?

Also, not everyone on this site is racist. Even if they were we could use your own words against you, "if the natives are racist then so be it". No one forced you to come on here.

Maybe get off the internet for a while。 Take a walk outside, take in the polluted air, enjoy people peeing in plain sight, maybe even get spit on.

I disagree.  I think the internet has become so ubiquitous that it no longer requires the use of the capital.

(but then, I don't get why days of the week are capitalised, Months are capitalised... yet the names of the seasons are not! I'm sure someone could educate me - but won't be able to give me a logical explanation for 'why'...!)

8 years 50 weeks ago

icnif77:

@Shining: I remember we talked about that once. Internet is full of links and explanations on 'why......'. These are rules of English language, and logical explanation of 'why' might not be given. 'Months are capitalized out of respect to the gods, and seasons aren't'. It's just a 'rule' ---->'full stop'.

 See this link:

http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/c...

**Rule 11. Do NOT capitalize names of seasons.
(I love autumn colors and spring flowers.)--they are NOT a "proper" noun or name a specific place. The only time you would capitalize them is if they are a person's name--"Meet my friend, Autumn Jones."
Or "Spring Byington was once an actress."

I agree with the principle of what fada is saying, but unfortunately I can't agree with his conclusion. I was racist in my youth, which I'm not proud of, and some very extreme things would have to happen before I go near those sentiments again. And in China, those things have happened.

You have to understand, China is not your average 3rd world country playing field, where your own intolerance is to blame for your lack of patience. There is more than just boorish arrogance and culture clash at work here. It's a whole system of apathy, abuse and misinformation that has conditioned everyone to be useless unthinking drones.

There is almost NO variety amongst the Chinese people, in their opinions, individuality and insightfulness. Only the ones that have foreign connections know anything about reality, and even then, they often can't shake off the indoctrination completely.

Chinese people often like to generalize about foreigners in the most apalling ways. But it's not a big deal: Their opinions are based on miseducation and hearsay, and they often overlook the fact that waiguo is a vast world of almost 200 different countries, with different languages, religions, cultures and lifestyles. China CAN be generalized however, because it is a very homogenous place. The only variety I observed is in income levels; even ethnic minorities aren't that diverse. I think the reason why generalizations about Chinese are more objectionable to you, fada, is because you know a lot of it is true. The truth hurts.

I have done a bit of self-reflection, and I must conclude that China has made me racist again. I'm not happy about it, but at the same time, I am not in error. Chinese people are delusional, and a lot of what they do is justifiably offensive. I reserve the right to pass judgement.

Courtesy of Samsara, I recently learned a bit about my Jungian personality type (INTJ). I need people to make sense, I have little patience for emotionalism, dishonesty and system abuse, and I'm a lot more judgemental than I thought. China has not been kind to me, and neither have I to China. Anyway, I'll be leaving in the near future. Let's see if I romanticised the West too much...

ScotsAlan:

I find it amazing Coineineagh, that we, the posters on this board, are spread all over such a massive country, but our experiences are all so similar.

To put it in a European context, it would be like me posting from the west if Ireland, you posting from Moscow, and our complaints about almost any subject are exactly the same.

Really amazing.

coineineagh:

Also @fada, concerning the comparison-quotes you made in your Question: The difference between including nationality or not in your opinion, should not automatically qualify your opinion as racist. That's anti-discrimination in overdrive, and just stifles freedom of thought. What's more important to ask is this: Was the person's nationality a real factor that lead to the problem, or was it included due to intolerance/ignorance/fear? I don't consider myself intolerant, ignorant or fearful, but still I end up including Mainland people's nationality in my opinions. It's because I observe the nationality to be relevant, having contributed to creating the problem, and making problem-encounters with Mainlanders far more frequent. If I can back up my discrimination with valid points, I don't believe it's racism.

If China was Uganda or even Suriname it would be different. But as the 2nd largest economy,  a nuclear power, a member of the security council, and the largest country by population, it is not a country that we can ignore.

-It has polluted the air, it has enabled African despots, it has created a corrupt client state in Cambodia, it has supported North Korea, it jails priests and pastors, it has arrested intellectuals, it has offered virtually nothing of value to the world except crass products, and has tried to destroy historical artifacts. It has bullied and lied to the world time and time again, and fat western capitalist pigs go on using china to enrich themselves at the expense of the western people.

-China is worthy of hatred and should be the enemy of every intellectual in the world. Gay rights in china? Better than the USA? Labor rights in a country with no unions? Freedom of religion in Xinjiang and Tibet? Environmental protection? Race relations? Please tell me one thing the world should learn from a Chinese century...as I see it a Chinese century is hell on earth along the lines of Dante.

Shining_brow:

You are confusing government with people. Policies with individuals.

I'm not saying you're "wrong" per se.. but it wouldn't be right to go up to the local laoban in your restaurant and punch them in the face for all of those things you mentioned.
