China being a nation, maybe the word "discrimination" would be a better fit. When I ride a bike in the bike lane, on a road with two one-way bike lanes and

* half of the traffic is wrong way

* I see a car in the bike lane (some guy decided that driving 1km in the bike lane to go fishing in the nearby channel is fine)

* People drive without light in the night on the ebike

* The other half of the traffic is on the area dedicated

* People tend to go to have all kind of rituals for their own care (ie. the hot water thing is the allegory of it), but here on the bike lane, it's all gone

Am I being a racis... a discriminator by having my mind blown by this, pointing-out the fractal amount of WTF behind it, while being a tad annoyed ?! Am I being completely wrong by thinking that China is a fertile ground for this kind of WTF ? Yes, yes, yes, I lived and worked in various "3rd world countries", learned to speak several non-latin, non-germanic languages, thank you, I know it's not like home outside of home. I speak of WTF, their likelyhood to occur, and trying to just rationalize what the hell is going-on.

I asked a similar question a while back. I asked that question because I had just talked to a guy and I had been shocked to the core with his racism. The words from his mouth stunned me.

Anyway, I sometimes feel uncomfortable with some of the posts I see on various "expat" sites, and on a BCD some of my posts could be construed as being a bit nasty.

Here is my explanation:  Chinese is not a race. When I write " Why do Chinese do.....?", I am not referring to a "race", I am using shorthand. What I should be saying is " Why do people brought up in Chinese culture generally do.....?

And more often than not, people on these boards try to apply reason to explain why things happen as they do. I expect this can be put down to western education. We are not satisfied to be given an answer "because it is", we have been taught to understand why.

Why, in Chinese culture are new mothers not allowed to wash their hair? We all know the answer, because if they wash their hair they will get sick in their old age. Okayyyyy.... erm.... so why does that only apply to Chinese culture.... Oh... our bodies are different.

So here is my take on the question. Do I confront racism in myself?  Of course I do. I was brought up in a hick town in the UK in the 70s. 70s Britain was racist. Was I racist when I was young?  yup, I was a product of my environment.

Am I racist now?  Nah. I see no difference in people because of their skin colour. I see people, human beings, not a race.

Is China a racist place. Of course it is. Are there racist people in the UK. You bet. That's one of the reasons I am here instead of being in the UK, because I can handle the daily racism I get here, I did not want my wife to deal with the very very nasty racism she would occasionally get in the UK.

I mean come on. My daughter is Chinese. She was born here, she has Chinese ID, a Chinese mum, a Chinese passport, but do Chinese see her as Chinese? Nope. She is not "pure" Han blood.  I would say that is a wee bit racist.

Given the fact we live in a country where we will always be outsiders (by Government policy), where we are subjected to casual racism on a daily basis, where we are described as "foreigners" by the media, it's amazing the vast majority of posters are actually so "non racist".

We come here to vent our fustrations, and to try help people who need help. This is where we come to get away from the dog eat dog world outside.  If we get bitten, this is where we come to complain about it, and ask why we got bitten .

Ha ha. By the way, what is said here is tame compared to what people who consider themselves to have Chinese cultural identity say about other people who consider themselves to have Chinese cultural identity .

You have to admit, Chinese people can have some pretty disgusting behaviors and beliefs. None of them are excusable.

And you know what? Neither is the crap I hear on the other end. I have a Chinese name on Facebook, and you know what people call me on a daily basis? "Chang shlang," "Chink tink-gook," "Chinaman," (this one came from someone running for congress), and all types of ridiculous shit.

The right-wingers in particular are super-ignorant. If I say ANYTHING bad about the police/government/a republican candidate, despite actually being a staunch conservative, I'm immediately a "Chicom," "a chink," etc. People make tons of assumptions based on my name. "You aren't American," "You don't live in America (I do)," "dumb korean gook," "dumb jap," "sketchy-ass asian," etc. All this in spite of the fact that my WHITE FACE is PLASTERED on my profile/page.

Face it. America is full of dumb, ignorant, racist cunts such as myself. And you know what? So is China. Hell, the whole damn world is racist as hell. I hate the whole damn human race, including myself.

I don't know why everyone is so quick to label anything against something as..

There are truths hidden in stereotypes... perhaps not to the degree people are led to believe but enough to be repeated.

First of all, Chinese is not a race, it is a nationality (as mentioned). Second of all, most of us are referring to mainland Chinese not usually HK, Taiwan, or Chinese living abroad (possibly).

I think if you make statements with examples as facts... it isn't really racism but something to ponder. As long as everyone looks at like "I don't understand this and it is very frustrating, what do you think?" Then this doesn't actually cause damage. Racism is a form of ignorance and hatred.

I came to China totally neutral, I had friends from all creeds and colors back home with NOT one ounce of racism. I came to China and now I follow my rule:

#1 NEVER TRUST MAINLAND CHINESE

Not because they are from the Mainland, yellow or speak another language. It is because of their education and social conditioning. I will approach them with care and then determine with enough evidence whether or not I can trust them. I have just been burned TOO MANY times. Since I adopted this rule, I am a lot more stress free and I prevent the issues they cause me before they cause them. You can call it racist, but I don't care about labels.... I care about the truth. Once you have the truth, you have knowledge and that's when you have the power to change your outlook on things.

Wont we feel much better if we are less sensitive on this? Everyone can be a racist in some degree, depends on how we were educated. And either we like or dislike some certain people, there are reasons. Need to take it personally.

My parents are racist against black and hispanics in America. For some reason, I never really inherited that trait from them. I am thankful for that. When my parents use the N-word to describe blacks, I call them on it. And, then they use the lame apology excuse, "there are white n*****s too". Or, they complain because hispanics in America refuse to speak English in public. I just do not understand this kind of thinking.

I seldom (not always) judge individuals for who they are and for their actions. To try to classify a whole group of people as one way or another is just not logical to me. I teach my students why stereotyping a group of people is wrong and claiming all people are not always one way or another. But, I wonder sometimes....is being stereotypical of a group of people being racist too?

I do dislike certain groups of people. Examples would include ISIS and terrorists, rioters in America destroying based on white on black killings, politicians in general (but more-so Communist/Socialist politicians, and a few others. But, I do not go out of my way to belittle the groups or resort to childish name calling. But, I will debate the issues regarding each one of these groups whole-heartedly.

As for Chinese people. I like most of them. I have come to understand many of their cultural and social issues that we westerners rant about. But, again, I do not take a racists perspective of this. I hope to have an understanding that we come from two different cultures, history and lifestyles. So, I will will try to explain away things that I dislike with "TIC" or "Agree to Disagree" statements.

This is my personal take on the question.

China is a country. Not a race.

When someone complains that American beer tastes like water, they're not being racist against America.

It is easy to confuse racism with broader attitudes that have nothing to do with racism, making it easy to frame someone a racist and sleaze away from whatever acts the accuser wants to escape from taking responsibility.

An example,  you're against stealing, cheating, lying and you catch someone doing that, the person accuses you of being a racist hoping this would get him/her off the hook. 

All you have to say is, "I hate ANYONE (meaning regardless of race, sex, age, nationality...etc.) who steals, cheats, and lies" .

Another example, there are so many liars, cheaters, abusers in mainland China.   A non-racist statement  would be "I hate ANY country/race/social group that is filled with liars, cheaters, and abusers; mainland China is one such place. " 

This way, those low lives can't sleaze off by framing you a racist.

From the attitudes here and the word games used to excuse the fact that most of you guys are bigoted leads me to believe you are all old men who went through a very different education system to me. I hear complaints about chinese mental acrobatics to justify bullshit.....I'm seeing the same stuff here with most of you.

I don't mind Chinese individuals, as I've made many meaningful connections here, I've found love, I've had strangers help me, for which I'm very grateful.

On the other hand, somehow, this doesn't really translate into a nice society. The society in the mainland is in reality pretty awful.

Why it is like this I don't know. It's not ethnical or cultural because HK, TW and Singapore all of which share similar cultures and are dominated by ethnical Chinese.
