Any suggestions on how to control a class of two to three year old children? It is not so much teaching as much as it is babysitting. The assistants are pretty much useless when it comes to English class time, and I am at the end of my tether with how they just sit and ignore children as they play fight, actually fight and generally just piss around the classroom when I am trying to garner their attention.
The main problem I face is that if I get too active, then the children don't listen, and if I don't get active enough then they are not interested. It also does not help when one of the assistants goes off half cock and starts to do their own English interpretation of English teaching, even though they don't even actually know any English at all.
Trying to speak to the school about it is useless as well, because they believe all of their teachers and assistants alike are perfect!

At that age, teaching is not really possible. All you can do is play games, sing songs and dance. Hokey Pokey is a good song...
maybe try watching some kids shows on the net for some lesson plans ideas
PM me if you want some links
If I post them here sprite will get them Great fire walled
I use a big basket of coloured plastic balls. They love that stuff and it gives them something to do other than beat each other.
2 -3 year olds that is babysitting. they are not ready for school at that age
derek:
I can hear the parents now, "My little daughter Wang Wang has a foreign English teacher. She's fluent now at 2 years old."

Uhhhmmm... scotch and soda? (Not for the ankle biters, but for the teacher...)
Red_Fox:
I'm easy. There'll be enough scotch to go around, believe me! Cheers!
In my opinion at that age they are perfectly capable of being in a classroom environment, from the time they start to walk they should be doing at least half days in a decent pre-school. At this age they are also going through a bit of a language explosion, they are especially capable of learning the language orally. Wait until they are around four years old before you bother with letters, reading or writing.
Use real objects, if you bring a photo of an apple into the classroom, they won't pay much attention, but have a real apple, they will all want to touch it, see it, smell it, and you can let them. Sing simple songs and play simple games, Simon says is a favourite in my class. What you say goes, don't say something unless you can follow through, that means telling a child to sit still, say it two or three times, then offer to help them sit still, but you have to mean it, they will know if you don't, and if you say what you don't mean they will not trust you and therefore not respect anything you tell or ask them to do.
I teach 3-6 year olds. It is important to know that it is impossible to control them 100%, but there will always be a few that are the instigators, remove them from the group a few times and they will learn that you mean business.
You have to be strict, don't be afraid of them not liking you, if your class is interesting and fairly active they will like you plenty.

I thought you had some sound advice
not to say I agreed 100percent with everything you are just as entitled to have your say as is anybodyhere is a thumbs up to even the score for now
DaveP84:
I am giving this a thumbs up as well. I have tried to remove those which set the others off. But as as soon as I do, they either a. start crying or b. one of the assistants immediately puts them back in the same position that I have just moved them from.
To be honest, I don't really have an issue with the pupils... Afterall, they are three years and younger! It is the assistants who are bloody useless. I wonder who I am teaching English to sometimes. When I do my drilling with them, I can never hear the children because the teachers are repeating to loud. I ask and even tell the assistants to be quiet, but they carry on anyway.
my older classes are so much better. The assistants in those rooms all have English degrees.
Stack up the chairs. Big piece of rope! Tie them to the stack of chairs. 1 little, 2 little, 3 little Indians........dance around them all tied up!
Oh, I mean tie up the assistants and have the kids circle them singing.......
GuilinRaf:
Better yet, have the kids do it!
Helpers cannot fight them without hurting them. They wont report you because the loss of face would be too much (you got tied up by 3 year olds...!!??) AND even if they do report y ou, you have deniability!
Everyone happy!!!!!
Well, that is except for the helpers....
