And cameras everywhere book drivers for running red lights, parking on the footpath and changing lanes without indicating.
As well as that, all the school entrances are surrounded by barricades and manned with guards in flakjackets and hard hats.
Is this progress?
What's changing in your city?

When did you have this dream?
royceH:
Maybe it was a dream.... We went out to all you can drink huo guo last night and from what I can recall that's what I was told by the boss. I told him the revenue from the spitters would be mind blowing. The traffic fines are definitely real...my friend has lost 9 points on her licence in the last week alone.
But...well...life here can be a blur sometimes. What's real, what's not?? I dunno.
It's all just a big dream.
What would happen if I climbed to the roof of my building and did a Phil Connors....you know, just kind of lean forward, spread my arms wide, and take the fast way down. Would I wake from that dream?
Is it cold out there, woodchuckchuckers?
They only book people here just before the festivals when they will need some extra play money for the holiday
I've seen the guards at schools, train stations too. I am yet to see the cops ticketing spitters but they should be, they would make a killing.
They do seem to be making an effort to enforce traffic laws though.
They've been targetting ebikers of late... anyone carrying a 2nd person (well, any adult 2nd person... apparenlty, cattying your bike is ok, but an adult isn't!!)
Still no movement on running red lights, barrelling through pedestrians on their legally designated place on the roads, etc etc...
royceH:
Yeah, I sometimes dink my wife home from the restaurant. She sits on the bike rack and I wobble along. We always enjoy it. Well, last week she declined to get on citing the fact the nearby fat, dribbling, smoking policeman would give us a ticket. Gees I laughed!
Currently here is a crackdown on people driving across solid lines. I have seen zero change in behavior and also still haven't seen a policeperson stand roadside with a vehicle driver discussing what might have been done wrong by the vehicle driver.
They've also recently changed the "turn right on red" from being always allowed to being "sometimes allowed", now only some junctions allow this, and the signing for it is really shit.
Oh, and a big junction downtown now has green in all directions at the same time, followed by red in all directions, allowing pedestrians to cross safely, but I must say I don't like driving through that particular junction. At least in the ones where the orange light is flashing people might let the accelerator for rest for a second.

That has reminded me of how the old Nepean Hwy used to work down the bay in Melbourne many years ago. It had 3 lanes and the middle one was for traffic going in either direction. Kinda like playing chicken. And the traffic lights at that time, down Chelsea way, weren't lights at all...but like a clock, with areas painted green, red and yellow, and the hand would go around clockwise.
It's not like that anymore.

Royce@ has Melbourne changed that much? God! I miss Melbourne! Used to live in South Yarra, near the Chapel Street and Toorak Road junction. Remember the times at the Jam Factory too. Man, do I miss Melbourne! Hope I will visit it again soon.
royceH:
That's fair dinkum, Hulk. The middle lane was for both directions. Sounds a bit like China driving, doesn't it!
You are right, Louis. Melbourne is one of the great city's of the world. I'd live there, except the weather's no good.
It is a fabulous place to take a loved one for a long weekend...so much to do in Melbourne.
People! If you haven't been to Melbourne, go there!
You can see a statue of me at the Punt Rd oval, just down from the MCG.
Scandinavian:
@Royce. All directions means. Cars from east, west, north & south may all go east, west, north & south at the same time. It is full on green. Cars, busses, eBikes coming at you from everywhere but above.
royceH:
I just said "either" direction. And then "both" directions. I was giving Hulk the benefit of the doubt. He hasn't slept for weeks.
