Q: Could China eventually become uninhabitable or unable to sustain itself?

The air pollution in Beijing is comparable to London's Great Smog of 1952, which killed 12,000 people. We will probably never know of any deaths in Beijing. But we do know that it will probably get worse, and Beijing was far from the worst polluted city in China.

40% of the country's water is undrinkable. That will also get worse. About 35% of the country's food is estimated to be contaminated in some way.

The soil under the cities has been irreversibly contaminated by factories, where high rises and apartment buildings now stand.

Soil degradation and erosion in the countryside go unchecked, and threaten the farmland needed to feed China's huge population.

China is making desperate and non-sensical claims on other countries land and waters, in a bid to be able to feed it's population. But there is also the problems of pollution of land, water and air that threaten the country.

Could it possibly get to a point where at least parts of the country become toxic wastelands?

It seems that way...everytime I think about that it doesn't seem too farfetched. With all the pollution that is in the air and with so many people adding to the pollution by throwing garbage on the grounds it could happen. Hopefully it doesn't. It doesn't matter what country it is every country is still part of our one world. Earth!

All these issues keep coming back to the same thing- massive population. I'm no expert, but I daresay it would be a lot easier to provide for 500 million population vs. 2 billion population.

(yes, I realise neither figure represents PRC actual pop.; I'm just using the #'s to illustrate)

Haven't spent much time outside the bigger cities, have you, Traveller?

I've seen the soil issue everywhere in the countryside. It's really, really bad. But we have an enemy in our home galaxy far worse than the goa'uld soil.

Enjoy, and welcome to the Polluter's Republic of China!

Severe birth defects, cancers, etc. People are dying extremely young. Even children are dying, their immune systems unable to cope. In the end, those areas cannot sustain or harbor human life for long.

That's why the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands are so important... to keep everyone's minds off the reality of what's going on inside the mainland....

And the South China Seas area...

And America's intervention....

And foreign teachers.....
