Q: crossing the road on a zebra crossing
you know what pisses me off,is that I cant cross the road safely on a zebra crossing with my little boy.I took him out for a walk yesterday he was in his push chair.it took me 10mins to try and walk across the road on a zebra crossing.no one stops for you on a zebra crossing.no gives a FUCK.
this is in Shenzhen.
what do they teach people here at driving schools about zebra crossings?
I might as well not use any crossings and just walk against the traffic.ya cant even walk along the foot path without some dick head on his electric scooter trying to run you down.

I should be used to it by now but Im not.traffic police dont even do there job and stop people from running red lights.
It's 3 points off the license not stopping for pedestrians.
I ALWAYS stop, and as soon as the foot touches the brake, the car behind honks and overtakes with no regard to the pedestrians. Chinese drivers are selfish retards.

I find the big yellow dump trucks are the worst. You know the type, they do the convoys when there is a land reclaimation project going on.
At red lights they just swerve into the oncoming lane and hammer through the junction at full speed.
I am sure the drivers must be paid per load. Their blatent disregard for human life is criminal.

@Scots: I would lean to the red ones being worst.... but aren't you forgetting driving school instructors ?
@Eorthisos (what does that mean, is it an actual name???) Naturally. But even as a foreigner you can still go and pay off a traffic cop.... or you can bring the ticket to the police station and then hand them another drivers license and have the points taken of that instead.
Before I step on the pedestrian crossing, I always look up in the sky. It's not 'religious thingy', but I want to be sure, comet isn't coming.
Then I'm sure, I'll live during my crossing!

Learning to drive in China, based on my wife's experience and a friend's wife
* Cram a theoretical exam
* Learn to drive the vehicle, over several days. One day consist of being on a track, with a lot of other people waiting like you. The instructor will spend 5 minutes with you to show you how to turn left, then 5 minutes to turn right, then 5 minutes to use the breaks, in a piecemeal fashion. You spend most of the day waiting for 5 minutes here and there.
* You have a couple of hours driving in actual traffic.
So with this piecemeal approach, you can imagine the driving skills of a fresh driver : terrible. As a kid, nobody is taught how to cross a cross-road with a bike, why there are two lanes, why there are white marking on the road, etc.Then, yes, nobody ever saw somebody stopping to let a pedestrian cross, so nobody does it. It does not cross the mind of anybody. Honking at anything with the potential to slow you down is the norm, so of course everybody does it. In general, being considerate of somebody you don't know and/or don't need, mei you.
But this is not your country, you have to adapt !
China is not your country, so yes, it's different of course !
Sure, for the right definition of obnoxious, nobody is obnoxious ! And we shall be positive, and after all things are negative if you look at them negatively, and life is better with the right happy pill ! And don't say it's broken by design, China have too much people and <insert generic justification for behaving like wild boars>
It's like when it's safer to cross at a red light because at least you can tell what direction the cars are coming from. When it's green and you think that means it's safe, they still turn right, so at bigger junctions you have to be extra careful. Ridiculous Chinese logic.

Turning right at red is allowed according to the Rules And Regulations. Except if there is a sign that says it's not allowed. As a pedestrian you'd never know what the rule is at the junction you are in, and as a motorist, you might as well turn right, because maybe the sign was put up behind a tree (and in Zhuhai there are persistent rumors that the traffic cameras are in fact not connected, I can only back up this with the fact that there is no correlation with the camera lights flashing and the amount of passing cars)
Everyone wants to kill you in Guangzhou. Nobody looks out for pedestrians, cyclists, whatever. The bigger vehicles have the right of way. And walkways are for bikes and ebikes. Pedestrians are irrelevant. I've lived in Guangzhou for 2 years and have the same experiences. Nobody gives a damn!
Rob you made the mistake in your question of thinking that what is taught in driving schools is there to improve the capabilities of drivers. Wrong!! People go to driving school to get a piece of paper called a licence, Once they have that they have succeeded and then they can get on with the important work of showing everyone else in the world how superior they are by driving in the most fucked up way possible. Like a lot of other stuff here there is a complete disconnect in their minds between anything they learn at school and the real world.

Yeah Tom. I don't think the driving schools here teach people how to drive: they just teach them to pass the test.
"Zebra crossings are only here for aesthetic purposes" is what I told to my parents when they visited me last month.
Pedestrian crossings are the official place to get killed.
If I became a driver, I'd carry a nail-gun around.... for the tyres of all the aresehole other drivers!!! Especially those who can't wait half a second after the light turns green to blast you with their horn!! (and, especially, those who blast you with the horn as your crossing on the zebra crossing...!!!)

I think there's another rule. If you take more than 1.5 seconds to get into a taxi, blast him with the horns!!
I was told when I arrived in China that if a car hit's you when you're jaywalking it's your fault. If it hits you at the zebra then the blame is 50/50.
I have no idea if it's true but it wouldn't surprise me.
Pedestrian in China? "You in danger!" You are low man on the traffic salad totem pole.
