Q: Culture shock when living in China, what bugs you?

OK spitting, peeing, nose picking, litter, not that irritating. The driving, I just drive aggressively, walk in front  of what ever now. The not answering, the not listening, the not thinking rationally for themselves, the beliefs that Chinese people are somehow different and have different needs, the laziness, cheating, stealing, immaturity, being rude,,,,,-nevermind- just brought up order, that goes to being rational and lazy and probably not thinking, I guess not listening should be thrown in..

What other things are there that about Chinese that drive you insane? How much more is there to endure?

I just had a wonderful Chinese night to make up for it all.

Spitting, pushing, cutting lines, poor hyigene, people with no shame, liars, cars don't give way to pedistrians, blowing knows in hand and then flicking it. This is all in Shanghai. People tell me I'm lucky and it can be much worse in smaller cities ... I don't know how much worse it can be !!!

jyao87:

Also people always freely ask personal questions like, how much do you earn? Ohh you're getting fat. Or hey why aren't you married? When you getting married? And also shop assistants either look down on you, you push you into buying shit. One time this therapist gave me the dirty look because I told her I thought the 10,000yuan massage package was too expensive.

Doing things for you without asking if it's something you would like them to do. For example, sometimes a friend of mine will be busy and can't go to lunch with me. So she will ask someone else to go with me. Recently it was a guy I barely know, merely a friend of a friend. Once, during the holiday, I ate meals with some girl I had never met. Why does she think this is ok? Why doesn't she ask me if I want her to do that? Because I don't. I'd rather just eat alone than have some awkward meal where I either can't speak to the person, or they ask me the same questions everyone else has when they first meet me.

I guess it all boils down to being treated like I can't take care of myself. I understand that I don't know Chinese very well, and that sometimes I do need help. But no, I do not need to sit in the only seat available in the bus when I am with my friends, and I certainly don't want to sit where people make room for me just because I am a foreigner. No, I don't need to "take a rest" every place that I go. No, I don't want to go shopping just because I am bored. I am not a girl, I am a woman. For once I'm happy that my parents were always nagging me about being responsible. Is it really so amazing that I can order chao fan on my own?

I have to say, that more than anything else, this sort of thing bothers me. These girls aren't necessarily more feminine, but they are encouraged to be less strong and less independent. Drives me crazy.

And when you DO something simple, like make your own deposit in the local bank you get "Wow! You are so clever!!!!!"

Yes, I've been told by local girls that it's not a good thing to be idependant or to have a postgraduate degree because men won't marry them. Why be so dependant your life on another person and theen throw your own away just so you can have a man and be married ?

jnusb, you are right on the mark with this. The worst part is after their deed is done you're expected to be gracious which means that they think you really do appreciate their gesture therefore they are going to do it again and again. If you tell them that you don't need their help in whatever regard, they look upon that as a loss of face. A no-win situation.

One of the things I still cannot get used to:

I date a girl who has excellent English. Then, at some point during the evening, she tells me "I have to go to the toilet"/

I was very happy when I thought girls just powedred their noses.....

aroberts42:

Pogger, where are you from!?!? In the states a girl would never say something like that. The most description you are going to get is "I have to go to the bathroom" but you'll never know why!

The litter. It infuriates me.

Oh, also, people on their phone in a movie theater. I literally hit a kid who was answering his QQ during the Avengers. He looked up at me like he had blinked and woke up looking at the Wicked Witch of the West, but he didn't look at his phone again so I call that a win wink

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
