Q: Cute guy but no time left?
There is a really cute guy I just met at my local swimming pool. I've hung out with him once and gone back and forth with emails for about a day or two now. We're also having lunch on Friday. Unfortunately I'm leaving China on Saturday and won't be back in Beijing until January of next year at the earliest. I don't plan on letting him know that I like him right away, but I want to figure out if he has a girlfriend (need some smooth way to do this). Should I continue to pursue this guy and see what happens while I am abroad or forget it?

Just do as the Chinese do....ask directly! 你有女朋友吗? You should also ask his age and salary while you're at it 
"Snooze, you lose," which means, if you wait, someone else will get what you are after! 
Yeh, just ask him straight. In 100 years who's gonna care? Or you could stalk him of course. Pair of binoculars, some dark glasses, follow him around for a day and see where he goes. If you spot a girlfriend you could bump her off, but that takes planning. Get back to me if.........you know, and.........we'll talk.

Of course, you should. What can lose for not doing it? Life is short...Plus if you don't probably you will regret not doing so...

Did you consider asking him for a one night stand?
It sort of gets to the point, AND saves time. 
point at sth he is wearing and say "it is odd that a guy would buy that for himself, did your gf buy that for you?" but from my experience using it with females the ones who do not want to address the question will not give a response.
