You do NOT qualify for a Z visa due to marriage. You qualify for a Q1 visa (D visas are still on the books but I've never known a single person to receive one). This visa allows you to stay in China with your spouse for anywhere from three months to a year at a time. If you want to work, you must apply for the work permit and Z visa which, upon approval, grants you the FRP which can be valid for up to two years.

He talking about the D visa that gives you 10 years in China, yes he can work on it.

Sinobear you're thinking the "Wife sponsorship" visa, that when your Chinese wife would walk into the PSB after a year of marriage and 60,000 RMB in her account and she sponsors you for 3 months, next is 6 months then maybe a year if luck. But you're right we would need a Z visa , we can't work on a Wife sponsorship visa.

Sinobear is correct, there is no such thing as a marriage leading to a Z visa.

But if you are one of the lucky 1% of  people in China to get a D visa then YES you can work any where you want and leave anytime you want.. But you'll be taxed at Y3500, not after Y4800..

I am sorry, I meant that I qualify for a D visa due to Marriage. Sinobear is quite correct. Z visa is for work purposes only. This is my 4th year teaching, and my 6th year in China. I have a resident visa but the schools renew it renewed every year for the past 4 years. I only know one person who has a D visa but he works for a large trading company outside China.  I have seen a statistic that indicates as many few as 4,000 D visas have been issued over the past decade (2002-2012). But don't hold me to that.

you need to be a top class manager, if you can ask your school to say your a manager for 5 years, you have a chance

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
