Q: Dealing with an Overbearing Ayi?
I just moved into my apartment and my roommate's mom lives a hop and a skip away. I like the fact that she is sweet and wants to take care of me. But she comes over almost everyday, stays most of the day and wants me to eat all the food she makes. I'm not a fan of bland, Chinese traditional, medicinal food (She is a military doctor) and I didn't come here to be bossed around by someone else's mom about what I should and should not eat. I know she is trying to help, but how do I make it clear that I don't need her help but still keep her happy? (PS, if there is no good way, then someone please refer me to the nearest meditation site near weigongcun
).
She does not want to take care of you, she wants to control you. Move or tell her to get lost. You don't want to keep her happy, you want her gone. Stop eating her food, tell her you want to be alone. Play Pantera songs at full volume.
If you're nice to her she will cook all day and make you fat. Be mean.

I agree Bill. I personally would get rid of her ASAP. Man up! People that try to control have something lacking in their lives..they're insecure about something or someone.

I'm assuming she either speaks good enough English to communicate with you, and or you speak fair enough Chinese to understand her. With Chinese, I often understate my fluency to the point most local people think I only understand ni hao, zai jian, and WC na li.
Chinese can be very touchy about a lack of ke-qi attitude (politeness). Personally I'd just act a tad strangely to get her off my back. I know when my girlfriends mom acted that way so much that she was overbearing for EVERYTHING.. I promptly took advantage of a small cut on my heel... by cleaning the wound and then cauterizing it with a blade I first heated with a lighter... all done in front of her. (please keep in mind I have an MD & PhD in the USA, don't try this unless you have the relevant experience).
She was a different woman after that, but still very respectful and kind. Best of luck to you!
