Q: Dear Shenzhen Expats, con artist alert.

This is only for Shenzhen expats.

There is a 6f/4inch white male, no hair, pot belly that makes him look 5 months pregnant, legs and shoulders are not as fat, American accent, no British accent that's been roaming around Shenzhen for almost a year now, our Wall Street team met him this weekend. He likes to wear grey shorts and grey shirt. Yes he's a big guy. We already updated the police on his location, if you see him don't give him money.

Other expats have posted pictures of him doing is work on the subways in Futian, Luohu and Nanshan, so many of the expats are aware of him, now we are too. We just want to spread the word.

His game is being a thief and con artist, his simple speech:

"Hey I lost my wallet can you give me a Y20.00" (yeah he only asked for twenty.)

One of our staff knew who he was thanks to a wechat post and we all said we know who you are and he left and took some food off the table of some customers that left.

This is really sick and sad, he's a native English speaker, and here he is walking around Shenzhen asking us for money. This gives us a bad name.

Probably the same guy I came across in GZ 5 years ago. He was featured on Chinasmack 3 years ago when he was working Changsa. He was photographed begging on a bus.

That guy sounds like a winner in life.

What's his story? Unemployed over stayer unable to leave? A drunk who blows his salary before the next pay day?

A guy walking around asking for twenty rmb?  If he sticks out that easily, just avoid him in advance of him noticing you.  If he spots you just try not giving him 20 rmb.  Problem solved.

ironman510:

The point is just to be aware he's bum roaming around that is also thief. Wish it was that easy, he approach us first with his question than the math unfolded and we knew right away who he was after his questions, but when you never met the person face the face, you can't really judge or avoid much based on looks alone. Remember how the shock of seeing the girls picture online than seeing her real face in person? Was it the same? Hell nooo lol. ,F**k no we didn't give him 20RMB

Thanks for the info / alert!

I once saw another who took food from somebody's table in a restaurant. All customers were shell-shocked!

You are right, such people give a bad name to the community.

No, because it's the ones like this guy that make the news and have all the rumours started about.

Now, EVERY expat is a bum who will lie to you and take your money. And, if there was a real person in such a bind, people won't help them out.

I mean 20 rmb?! Really? I give that to most homeless people. How can that be enough?

Shining_brow:

If he asked for 100, most would balk. If he asked for 50, again, large percentage would think twice... and be remembered!

You ask for 20, and most expats won't think too much about it. Also, stand in a popular metro station, you're likely to see a few expats every few minutes, who won't mnd handing over that 20... if you calculate 20RMB every 2 minutes - that's 600 per hour, for 5 hours, is 3000 per day... for 20 days is 60K per month... I challenge any ESL teacher to make that sort of money!

I will presume my math to be off, and too high... but you can see it doesn't really take much to get a sizable income generated.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
