Yesterday, on the flight back home... China Eastern Airlines (FTR)
Youngish (I presume) married couple sitting next to me. Businessmen surround me.
Announcements stating quite clearly to turn off all mobile phones, as they can interfere with equipment.
The girl is taking a pile of selfies (only a few hundred, cos you know how important it is for when old age sets in!!!), the guy is doing some crap like an sms or whatever. Guy opposite me is ON THE PHONE.
The air hostess is right next to us, ignoring it all as she hands out blankets!
WTF??
None of the above bothered with actually turning off the phones for the flight (maybe put into a quiet mode).
I know many of the up and coming.. and the newly wealthier.. are all arrogant pricks with an entitlement complex, but why the stewardess just ignored it is ridiculous!!!
My evil mind went to: I wonder how the reaction would be if it turned out MH370 'disappeared' cos some arrogant bastard - or narcisistic woman - wouldn't turn off his/her phone, and completely screwed with the navigation system!! Who'd be seeking compensation then???
It's been proven that mobile phones, etc., have absolutely no effect on anything other than the possibility of interfering with radio beacons used for bad-weather approaches. The danger is of these hand-held objects becoming projectiles in the case of rapid deceleration.
Now, is it the fault of the passengers for not following proscribed rules or the fault of the Flight Attendants (not "air hostesses" or "stewardesses") for not enforcing the rules?
Scandinavian:
There is a trend that Chinese airlines don't enforce such rules, although I've mainly seen it on domestic flights.
Stiggs:
I was on a China Southern international flight earlier this year and the guy next to me was told to turn his phone off even though it was in flight mode. Maybe some airlines are more strict with safety than others.
Hotwater:
Interesting that the OP was on a China Eastern flight. I flew with them from GZ to Nanchang last Saturday & after the seat belt sign was off took my phone out to read something (it was already in flight mode btw), the flight attendant came over & told me to turn it off. Seems it depends on the particular staff, not the airline.

Sinobear is correct but there has to be some reason they make these demands of passengers. Any flight attendants or pilots out there? If so please enlighten us.
