Q: defrosting your fridge ..ever do that anywhere but in China?

I think I remember MOM doing that in the 60's .... I just did it, again, cause my little drawers were filling up (pun) ...  I got so much meat and cheese now that the freezer is overwhelmed.....  I been on the road for 40 years and this is the only fridge I have ever had to manually defrost......  few times now.   ... thank GOD for hairdryers and Chinese cleavers.

I've had to do this occasionally in the past (maybe once every 5 years!). Mainly due to overfilling or leaving the door slightly open occasionally. Modern freezers do seem to require this less though.

Soinds like the door seal is maybe not right. Might be worth giving the seal a good clean, especially in the grooves.

Then again, it could be because you sit in front of your open fridge supping your beer Smile

scots is right: if there is even a small gap in the hermetic doorseal, the cold temperature will suck in moisture and it will condense into ice or a pool of water.

never had real serious ice issues, but you really should defrost fridges once in a while. ice buildup reduces the cooling element's effectiveness, wastes energy and may even lead to it breaking.

when i know i'm out of the house for a few days, i'll empty the fridge beforehand (might not be possible if you have a mountain of cheese and meat), and just switch it off with a bunch of rags on the floor. then you'll have a touch of mopping up to do when you return, that's all.

I'm from Ireland and we often defrost the fridge... well, not often, but more than never.
