would it be like home...  make an appt., wait a month, they look and make another appt. wait another 2 months.

I think that you are in Guangzhou, BHGAL, if I am not mistaken.

Please have your wife take you to the Dental Surgery at the No. 2 Sun Yat-Sen's People's Hospital.  There will be no great wait for an appointment; you will find the prices extremely moderate compared to what you would pay in Canada and the service very efficient.  Some of the dentists and dental assistants at the No. 2 speak English.

Make sure you ask for painkiller injections, they cost extra and many dentists will assume you don't want them unless you ask.

Have had a full set of crowns? (ground my teeth and covered them with full porcelain set on silver/gold veneers) done on my lower teeth at a dental clinic in a hospital in Shenyang. Very happy with the result and the price was around 5000Y from memory. I would never have been able to afford to get it done in Australia.

well, first time in Zhejiang (2006) the guy just started grinding away,,, so I said 'oouch',,,   so then he pulled out a stainless-steel syringe/needle contraption that looked straight out of a 1950's US Medical soap-opera.  He gives me an injection,,, Without a Topical ,,,,   so,,, I said 'double oooouch' !      hehe,,,   well, they certainly have a way of getting your attention !

work-quality and price certainly good enough.

Went to a local dentist "office" because I wife had a tooth ache. His office consisted of a dentist chair sitting in the middle of the living room in front of the TV because, you know, he wants to be entertained when he's rootin around the inside of your mouth with sharp objects. Anyway, we left after he dismissed our explanation and wanted to pull the tooth out,

We went to a foreign run clinic which was very expensive but they did good work and the chances of anyone catching Hepatitis was miniscule. So yeah, spend the extra money.

The largest hospital in Nanning has a dental clinic. It has the most up to date equipment I have seen. There many smaller dentist that have practices there and are a little cheaper but seem to have the same equipment. I have had a number of visits to both and find them very good. The dentists I have visited in the US that charge an arm and a leg for doing very little and have equipment that is out of date compared to the ones in Nanning. I have all my dental work done in China. Franck3

i had a new root canal and crown done for 800 rmb and was quite satisfied but i should preface my comments with the fact that im a cheap sob that went to mexico for all my dental work when i lived in america because it was cheaper than my dental insurance plan , so i dont know what to compare to.

Last time I went for a quick teeth cleaning, they demanded 1800 RMB. To top it off, there was blood splatter everywhere in the office, and brown spots, too, from old blood.

And that was in an upscale dental chain. No thanks!

A simple cleaning up here i Daqing cost 100yuan. No problems at all. My wife took me to the hospital and we had no problems at all. Yes, the dentist was situated in the hospital. I though that was strange at first as I'm used to the dental clinic in Canada.

check websites like dianping for reviews. some western style clinics are damn expensive though. i found a place in shanhgai, pretty friendly, even could speak basic english, only half price of the western places, but service was not bad, result was pretty good. appointment was made the day earlier... very efficient.

Hong Kong looks to have very good services as a friend of mine told me. Yes, it is very expensive. Here, I hope I never have to go to a dentist. Maybe South Korea would be another option.

I don't know why whenever I see a dental clinic or a hospital in China they remind me of Saw movie.

I had a double root canal. It was fine. But, you really need to ask around to make sure you get a good dentist.

It's going to be hit or miss, depending on where you are.  Big western dentists in large cities will cost as much or more than in your home country. These places mainly cater to expats with foreign insurance.

I have been to the dentist quite a few times here in China.  I've been to a small clinic in Henan, and while I was initially scared, it was absolutely fine. The dentist was trained in the US, all the equipment was very modern, and it was actually one of the more pleasant experiences I've had at a dentist anywhere. I've also been to a state-run dentist in Shanghai, where the building looked like it was from the 1930s and hadn't been cleaned since then, and all of the "dentists" pretty much had these roll-out Dexter style "kill kits" full of "traditional" dental tools - so I escaped immediately.

Basically, look at the dentist office.  Is it clean? Do they have modern equipment?

Find a private clinic and even ask to speak with the dentist. You can find excellent dental care here - just avoid the "hospitals" like the plague. You don't want some guy who's been trained that cavities are due to a Qi deficiency attacking your mouth with a hook and a hammer then rubbing some lamb in there for good measure.

Another hint: The doctor's name. If it is followed by DDS - good bet it's a legit foreign trained doctor of dentistry.
