Q: Did anybody notice recent spike in adverts for Primary School English teachers?

Shenyang placement agent  told me, there is a new Law (Regulation), as all Primary Schools in Liaoning must have some English  lessons weekly.

I replied to few adverts, and offer was to work at two or three different Primary Schools in the area with less than 20 teaching hours per week combine.

I read loads of adverts for Shenzhen Primary Schools, too.

That spike has been happening some time now. At least 2 or 3 years. It's such a spike that I saw a guy who can only say hi get a job as a teacher.

The question is not whether or not there is such a law -- and I am in Shenyang -- but whether or not all of the schools that desire to have foreign ESL teachers can actually manage to get authorization from the Labor Bureau and the FEB to do so.  This is a really interesting question (the one posed by the OP) and I hope to provide more information over the course of the next several days.

It looks like Regulation is for whole China, not only in different Provinces.

I've seen adverts for Primary School English teacher in Liaoning, Guangdong, Sichuan, Shandong.

Shenzhen adverts require full -time work, 8 hours per day, Mon -Fri, similar like Chinese teachers work.

I have noticed the spike, but I did not know anything about a new regulation.

I also HEARD the education department, or whatever the PRC calls it, is making a minimum age for starting to learn English. I thought this might be one of the reasons.

Who wants to work in a primary school??  Not bloody me!

That's not to say I don't like teaching younger students...I do.  But not 40 odd of them of whom only 3 care to learn English.

Nup.

I teach in a middle school and am lucky if more than half a dozen in any class actually care about English.

(In fact, I suspect more do but they're just too gutless to have a go...)

Luckily my satisfaction comes from the privates I have on weekends.

icnif77:

Good Contract the is reason I am at the Primary School. Chinese teacher is with me in the classroom, so kids are nice during the class.

I was teaching in Middle School in Jixian, but I prefer Primary School students.

There're not too many private students here. I would do anything for some privates or Kindergarten as addition to my present 10 hours per week (Tue - Fri).

I was in Dalian (very busy with 'privates'), before I accepted present Contract. I was 'counting' Fu will be same as Dalian.

You might consider asking a trusted friend to post an online ad for some weekend classes.  There will likely be some middle school students around who plan to study overseas.

Where's your city in relation to Urumqi?

I've worked in both primary and middle. I thought I would hate primary, but it was better than middle school. Students are more interested in learning English at a young age in my opinion. Can't deal with kindergarden.

I have noticed many more than usual coming from Beijing and Shanghai; I'm sure its because of the pollution.  Most FTs leaving and the new ones who are brave enough to come leave after the first pollution warnings pop up on their cell phone.  Many of the training centers are moving South.
