I don't mean "the media" of course, I mean is there some body of work, be it novels, movies, music, plays, that you started learning Chinese in order to understand? I ask because lots of people learn Japanese so they can read manga or learn Italian because they want to sing opera; but does anyone learn Chinese because they want to read "Dream of the Red Chamber?" or something? I'm not saying this kind of person doesn't exist I've just never met anyone who cites something like that as their motivation for learning.
For me it was just because I had some vague idea that I wanted to be a badass who spoke Chinese, now I find myself with no quality media to consume.... without great effort, at least.

No I didn't.
I would have thought that most people learn a language so that they can communicate with other people. Anther popular reason is that their education system makes them! Au revoir.
