Q: Did China intentionally make Tianamen Square the largest walking space for people?

I read in the guiness book of world records that Tianamen Square was the largest walking area on earth for people. Was that intentionally done? I can't think of too many other places with large walking spaces. In washington they have some big walking spaces for tourists. I have been to Tianamen Square and it is a pretty big space for people to walk. I was unaware of the record until I looked in the Guiness World Record Book.

To be honest I don't think they did do it intentionally. I think China is such a big country that it could afford to create that kind of space. It's actually pretty cool and it is a great tourist spot.

Well...China has a lot of people, and they probably knew that a lot of people would gather there on anniversaries and other celebrations. Considering that, I'm sure they wanted to have enough space.

wouldn't the largest walking space just be a field in the wilderness?  or some farm with acres of land?

I'm sure Antarctica has plenty of walking space.

Isn't it fairly old? Also, anything new would have been build to host 1950s style soviet parades, cause Mao was such a f*cking wannabee.

yes they did. you know why? because they wanted the person  standing there to feel tiny and insignificant compared to the power and total awesomeness of THE STATE.

It was Mao's pet project, as were most of the surrounding buildings (ignoring the north side, of course).

Although it's extremely old, originally Tiananmen square was quite a bit smaller than it was today and, surprisingly, surrounded on three sides mainly by residential buildings (which were mainly ruined due to Opium wars/Beijing passing back and forth between warlards/etc), but Mao wanted to make that part of Beijing grand and wonderful and part of his legacy.
