Q: Did you ever feel as if Chinese people were purposefully trying to piss you off?
My good friend told me that many Chinese try to make others angry because if they make someone angry, they sort of win. She told me that this is why I shouldn't react or get angry to rude behavior.
This explains a lot for me. Now I see why I get that dumb smile.
getting angry is not as good as getting even. they dont understand that one very well either because they think short term. i absolutely love getting even, i have developed the skill to an art form that would make lucifer himself blush.
pay attention to their surroundings and what they need and then get rid of something they need when they dont expect it.

one-upmanship at its shallowest. even some chinese recognize the rudeness involved. being vocal about your alleged superiority is supposed to prove that they are one of the bullies, who can get away with it. not responding sorta admits defeat to them, but it's also a form of protection. there will be no escalation if you dont react, and at least you score points for patience/endurance.
No, I'd be surprised if they were trying to do that.
I don't think they're smart enough to go down that path. Piss us off, yes they do. But they manage to do it be just being themselves.

I couldnt agree more. I cant imagine them thinking anything through enough to come up with a devious plan to piss you off on purpose. It makes much more sense to think of them as 12 year olds in sorta grown bodies. I mean have you ever heard them talking about us when they think we dont understand? Its not thoughtfull or insightful. Its stuff a 6 year old comes up with. His nose is so tall! ( a group of 6 angry looking guys). His shoes are so big! Foreigners love bread and pizza. This is what goes on inside what they call a brain. Dr.Evil they are not.
I'm a bit torn. On the one hand, I have often wondered to myself if my Chinese colleagues could really be as stupid and impervious to correcting their selfish, lazy behavior over a long period of time as they are. Their feats of incompetence just don't seem humanly possible. On the other hand, like royceH says, it would shock me to the core to find out that those people are actually that intelligent.

Haha, no, I'm coming back from the Philippines right now. I just spent two weeks with the most selfless and friendly culture that I have encountered. At the present, I am sitting in the Hong Kong Airport, with a beautiful view of mountains rising into a natural mist and blue sky, watching nongs scream into their cell phones, stand around in narrow walkways like retarded zombies, obliviously let their brats run hollering around aisles and shops, and generally ignore hapless Hong Kong staff who ask them to show even a modicum of civilized behavior.
That's the problem with trips out of China, isn't it? You get a break from it...but at the cost of being reminded that you could have moved to pretty much any of the surrounding countries and immersed yourself in a real culture (Post-Maoism is making me crack).Janosik:

If this is a reference to bad classroom behavior in the attempt to piss off the foreign teacher, I can easily believe it. There's not much to consider there. If you deviate from your script in any way then you quickly find yourself fielding questions from a certain one student that seem designed to either push your buttons or the other students' buttons.
In the outside environment though, I don't think people generally act like dumbasses intentionally. There may be a few that wanna try it but its easy to call them out on their mess and publicly embarass them.
She probably meant you shall control yourself a bit better than you are doing now.
Irrespective of your current situation not a bad advise, is it?
