Only 'almost' got into a fight one time.  And the situation was entirely my fault.

I went to a night club with a friend, had several beers and eventually was forced to make the inevitable trip to the bathroom.  The bathroom was very crowded, there was a line 5 deep at every urinal.

I patiently waited my turn and when I finally reached the front of the line and was doing my business, suddenly someone behind me started rubbing my shoulders.  As far as I knew, this wasn't a gay bar, so I was startled (and pretty drunk) to say the least.

In mid-stream I turned around, fist raised and ready to deck the guy who was groping my shoulders.  It was then that I discovered 2 things.  1) This poor guy worked for the club and it was his job to give shoulder rubs to guys taking a piss.  Next time you think your job sucks, think about this poor schmuck.

And 2) since I had turned mid-stream, I was actually pissing on this guy.

I felt so very, very bad.  I must have apologized about 100 times.  I gave the guy 100RMB as an attempt to make my conscience feel better and then left the club and never returned.  haha

Almost once. I was having a great time and some stupid a-hole at the bar  asked me where I was from then started insisting Canada and China are "fighting." And started saying "I know kung fu!" And getting really aggresive. I was peaking on E, so I just moved away and told others to stay away from the guy. Bunch of retards in China.

I like to think someone in less of a good mood beat the ever lovin' crap out of him later that night.

Yeah, some rich chinese guys son was outside a club waiting for a taxi. he had three or four girls with him all of which were definitely prostitutes. He asked if I speak chinese and where I am from. I speak fluently and told him America. Then he went off saying how Ameircans are dirty people and how "American is shit, come on American is shit". I am an ex-marine, that being said I have discipline and created a distance between us. Then he continued towards me and my friends getting in my face and then pushing one of his "girls" around until she would verbally agree to his statement that "American is shit". There was a lot of other things said, and in the end I ended up insulting him in rather well going after stereo types and what not, I'm not a jerk but this guy was perusing us continuing to talk shit.

Just though of another one, while in yangzhou, my buddy was seeing a girl. two months in to it he found out that she was a doctors "xiao san" mistress. Found this out by a frantic call one night when he took her home to find out that her doctor "boyfriend" (married with a child) was waiting at her apt (that he provided to her) with two of his friends. They preceded to push my friend around while the doctor began hitting the girl in the face and head. She began beading from a laceration on her head and then he tried to block the blows, the three of them began hitting him. Thankfully for him, he was slightly drunk and crazy mad. They broke his glasses and some other things in the apartment but he managed to stop the doctor from hitting the girl. During all this he had called me and by the time I arrived the cops were there. The police insisted that he and I leave and leave the bloody girl there. Their reasoning was that the we didn't live there and that since we didn't live we had no grounds to be there or help the girl to the hospital. The police also said the girl didn't need to go to the hospital and that we shouldn't worry about her since the owner of the apartment was a doctor. (lol unreal) I began lying and said that I and my friend were diplomats sons, and that this girl was pregnant with his child, also saying that this doctor was harassing her and beating the mother of my friends unborn child. I insisted that the police escort us to a hospital and let her get medical treatment. During this time the arguing had rallied neighbors who began throwing insults at us saying that we were foreign trash and telling us to leave and stop beating their women (as you can tell, completely un-informed). I began insisting that the police speak with my "lawyer" in beijing and throwing out fake names and telling them that my police friends in Nanjing will be very happy to come to yangzhou and have a talk with their commanding officers about their treatment of foreign dignitaries. Finally we were allowed to leave, my friend and the girl left in a cab and I began walking away getting pushed by the doctors friends. When I got home to my apartment complex gates I got out of my cab and another cab immediately opened its door, it was my friend and the girl. They told me the doctor followed them and I looked back to see an older audi a6 and a santana sitting running just 100 meters away. So I got in and we told the taxi driver to lose them. this part was like a movie, you think taxi drivers drive reckless during rush hour, wait till it's 4:30 in the morning and you throw 70 some rmb at them and tell them to lose the two cars following us. After almost shitting my pants twice while flying through intersections we ended up losing them. The next day I awoke all to early to see the audi back at out gate with three or four guys in it. I called the guards and told them to call the police, but they didn't, they did walk up to the car and told me that the car was "waiting for a friend", the girl had ended up back at our apartment and they must have figured that we lived in the complex (jinghuacheng) but didn't know the building we were in. In the end they broke up, and after her hiding out at out apartment for two days she snuck away. As it turns out she was a college student (we knew that already) who was this doctors mistress. She wanted to leave him and be with my friend but when she told him she was leaving he got upset and said that he would contact her school and tell them she was living off campus and that she wouldn't be able to graduate due to that, he also claimed to know her parents in changzhou and said that he would find them and tell them bad things about her and she worried they would disown her. She used this as an excuse for going to see him again a week later. This all happened almost a year ago and it ends up that she went back to the doctor, I saw them together maybe a  month ago. Thank god the didn't see me, or didn't acknowledge me, cause I don't want anything thing to do with them. The moral of the story, if you find yourself in a bad situation just lie to them and tell them some shit about how your important. This worked rather well for us, the key is to talk down them and act as though you truly feel you are superior to them, many still fear offending a foreigner/dignitary/person with greater social status. The other moral to this story, don't try getting involved with fast ass girls who you meet at the bar.

Shit, got another one. So an English guy I knew in yangzhou was out with friends after drinking and they were waiting in line at mcdonalds. While waiting the English guy and an  American were hit by a Mercedes c class as it went flying through the front window (you can see this video on youtube and I'm sure youku). but what the video doesn't show is that after the english guy got hit, he was pinned between the car and the countertop where you order food. As he was in obvious agony (both legs shattered) a Chinese guy went up and got in his face with a cell phone and was trying to take video. Well there was another english guy there and he pushed the chiense guy away, but he came back and was still trying to get the "good shot" of the mangled foreigner. By now the non-injoured english guy was pissed, he grabed the cell phone and threw it on the ground breaking it to some degree. The Chinese guy obviously didn't like this, but he was rather small in stature and chose rather than fighting to insite other locals to begin arguing and pushing the 4 foreigners that were there. They went as far as to grab the guy with the smashed legs and insist payment for the phone. At this point there was quite a mob due to the crash and they bagan turning on the foreigners even tossing objects at them while they were trying to get into the taxi. The english guy that wasn't hurt managed to call my friend (a Scottish guy) and ask for help since non of them spoke Chinese and just wanted to get to the hospital. by the time the scottish guy and an american and his chinese wife arrived the ambulance had left and there there were no foreigners left. But there was many Chinese and they began approaching screaming at the three people that just showed up (two white guys and a shanghai girl). after some pushing and shoving and people screaming to pay for a cell phone (which they had no idea about) the three jumped in a taxi. But the taxi was immediately surrounded and the crowd wouldn't let them leave. The driver was quite literally pulled from the cab after being told that "helping foreigners would make him a bad chinese". At this point there was a crowd that wouldn't let the cab go, and no taxi driver in the cab. They all ended up getting away after the one guys wife (chinese) talked a little, enough to give them a moment to make a break for it, and get down the block to a new taxi, one that had a driver, haha. This was all a little crazy, but the two guys that showed told me they were legitimately scared, they said people were throwing things at them and screaming and surrounding them. These were big guys too, the Scottish guy is around 6'5" but lanky and the American is 6'2"? and like 300 pounds, and for them to be scared it must have been kinda bad.

So, perhaps the morals to these stories is avoid conflict while in China. you see none of these "altercations" really became physical, and I think that's important since you see how badly the third situation could have turned out, no matter how big these guys were. Even though it goes against my instincts and nature, I think it best to keep away from psychical conflict in these situations, for me personally I don't wanna find out what happens to foreigners who beat the hell out of a few people and then end up in jail or on the wrong end of a mob.

I know I wrote way to much but after reading the comment I was thinking "hey, I never got in a fight in China" but then I realized the times I almost did.

My relatives who served in the Corps prefer the term  "Former Marine" and will politely (this aint Hollywood) point this out.

Yes, but not the type of fight you would imagine. It was more of a friendly fight like there is one seat left and me and the chinese guy argued over who was gonna take it. I insisted he take it he insisted I take it we go back and forth until finally someone gives in. That also works with the alcohol. If there is a little bit of beer left we argue back and forth who will finish it. I keep insisting he take the last of the brew and he keeps I do until someone gives in!!
