Q: Did you ever have a good hospital expirience in China?

I was at the doctors this morning. Well, actually I gave a friend a lift to the clinic. This was a completely different expirience than past times at the doctors. This clinic has large windows for natural light, of course examination area is sheilded for privacy. The room was clean and quite, sure a couple of people came barging in, but a nurse was there to deflect them from the doc when she was busy. At the examination, both the doctor and a nurse was present at all times. They spent lots of time in engaging the patient, in a very professional manner. They used a computerized journal system to see past details, and write down notes. As it was a reocurring condition, we'd brought the old packaging from what was given last, my firend doesn't speak a word of Chinese, but I can ask for "one more please". The doctor refused without proper examination, which revealed that it was indeed the same treatment needed. It was. The clinic offers both domestic and imported drugs, there is a huge pricegap, but still, nice to have the option. The nurse spoke no English, but the doctor actually spoke a bit, although we called my wife on speaker phone for some translation assistance.  So, that is the expirience. Now the facts. My friend is my dog. Perhaps I have rambled about how horrible I think animals are treated in China, but this particular vet, they care. Sure, this ran upwards 200RMB, which is a rip off, as here we are talking doggy version of athletes foot. A thing I've had myself, and paid perhaps 20RMB for that doctor visit (including a tube of domestic ointment)Of course the hospitals face far larger number of patients, but still. How can it be that a vet clinic just seems far more functional than "the real hospitals"

I have always had really good hospital experiences and thats because like everything else in China you should do your best to control the situation. I google thouroughly all of the common fixes and medicle terms and medicines commonly used. Then i pay for VIP treatment. And i ASK THE DAMN DOCTOR TO CLOSE THE DOOR! Not a single one has ever refused. I cant understand why everyone complains about that. Common sense people! And then if the doctors diagnosis matches with what i googled im good to go. If it doesnt ill tell him what i know and see what he sais. I swear alot of you make problems much more difficult for yourselves.

The one time i had no control was also a great experience. I got drunk in sanya and swam for too long. I guess i was super drunk because i swam so long that when i came to shore all the people and chairs where gone... Including my phone and spare cash. I was pissed and assumed that chinese would never steal and a beach worker locked it in the glass rooms with the beach chairs.

Smart men kick through glass doors REAL men make karate sounds and elbow through doors. I didnt find my phone or money but i did come across a graphic crime scene. After following the gory blood trail that seemed to go in circles searching for the victim to rescue i discovered it was my mangled elbow.

Took the half inch thick shards out and when i could see bone in 2 places i decided a trip to the hospital was in order.

They were awsome. Didnt need to wait. They took me in gave me a shot of something cleaned it up and stitched me up all in 20 minutes. Cost me 100 kuai. I was really impressed. Though they could have done better stitching as my scar isnt all that pretty.

Scandinavian:

I'd say if you have to close the door yourself, this is not a good experience. Oc course I always close the door, politely tell the crowd to wait outside, never been a problem, but why are they there in the first place. It sure as h... doesn't speed up anything.

A former mate of mine sure did.  He showed me and the other person we were having dinner with the recording he'd taken earlier in the day of his female doctor colleague giving him oral relief in his office.  The whole thing.  Both of them in white coats and all.  One standing and the other kneeling obediently.

That sure stacks up as a positive hospital experience.  For the stander, that is.

I'm still waiting for that first good experience.  But Mike's right, better to control the situation.  Hence, I now refuse to go to the hospital while in China.  I don't need to waste my time and money to have a "doctor" tell me to only eat rice porridge, no seafood or fruit, and drink more hot water, and then prescribe some "medicine" that is placebo-ish at best.

My insurance covers some private hospitals, so I get much better service there than I would back home. I've never sat foot in a public hospital in China.

Visited friends in hospitals before but have never been warded before, thank God for that! The filth and lack of hygiene puts me off! Why would I want to seek medical hep in those public hospitals? The private ones are slightly better but still way off from universally accepted hygiene and safety standards. First off, how can anyone smoke in a hospital? And doctors here don't put on gloves when they examine patients! If there was an epidemic can you imagine the speed of contagion? Doctors themselves aren't protected and can you imagine the speed with which diseases spread?

the wife of one of my hostel mates was pregnant and this weekend we had to take her to hospital at 5am in the morning.

Well we were definitely surprised when they said we have no doctors at this time, you will have to wait until 8am...

We went to another hospital and by 8am the cute healthy child was already born...

tbh66:

Why is she pregnant and residing in a  hostel?  If in a hostel, I assume a foreigner,  why would  one want a child born in a Chinese hospital?

A Vet visit for me at home is $80, emergency calls used to be double, now the Vets wouldn't do them, must go to emergency clinic, $450 as soon as I walk in and I've never encountered a decent Vet at one. The last one diagnosed an air pocket as an undigested big bone in xray.

I went to a Chinese hospital once, nurse's outfit looked filthy. I have such severe sleep apnea that it's off the scale. I lost the nasal piece for my CPAP and didn't know where to get one. The female doctor said she knew what I was talking about and gave me directions, almost across the street. I had my GF with me and we couldn't find a medical supply store, only a hotel. I didn't get why the doctor sent me to a hotel right away. Then it hit me, the doctor thought I was tired and needed sleep. Doctor didn't understand anything.

I usually respond to the "you should go to the hospital" line with "I don't have the time to travel to Hong Kong".

Nope, most nurses and doctors here are equal to a high school kid with a medi-wiki... (even worse in most cases) back home.

Clinics are usually better because they actually care if you come back for repeat business.

Hospitals... don't really care at all.
