I've only been here for a few weeks and I've already gained like 10 pounds. Must be all the cheap beer and street meat on a stick.
I gained. Lots. Something like 7-8 kilos over the time (8 months), it was horrible.
My partner lost like ten kilos during the same time. He looked gaunt.
loose
first month about 10 kg, now loosing speed is about 1 kg/month
so I need at list one more year in China to be satisfied
then ... I can loose a little my habits
I do not drink alco, and eat as low wheat products as possible, mostly meat, veggies, rice noodles etc.
But I do not make any "strict diet", just eat more healthy, and more frequent but smaller portions. Sometimes even some "junk food" like KFC, sometimes chinese buns and burgers.
Other big difference is a lot more of tea - instead of sweet black (Arabian style) coffee.
I came to China with 80 kgs, end up this spring with 115 kg. now i am 10 kgs down and gonna be under 100 kgs soon. but is not easy with that creasy oily food everyday, where the rice don't make feel full stomach for more than 2-3 hrs, so feel hungry again. There is almost no mineral water available, just Perrier, but drink everyday 2-3 bottles with ruin my wallet.
I came to china in 2006 at 74 kg. Today I am 61 kg. At 45 I feel better and am healthier than when I was 35!
Between the beer and oily food I packed on 12 kgs over 12 months in China.
In 3 months back home now I have lost 10 kgs and have 2 more to go before I return to China next month.
The key is going to be keeping it off when back. The trick is exercise which I get at home but very little of in China.
I'm losing weight. Been here almost a year now, and lost about 10 or 15lbs (not sure which, have no scale to measure!). But all my clothes are much too big now, and I went from a 28" waist when I arrived to a 26" waist. I'm not very big to begin with, so it's actually a bit of a shock.
I think for me, not drinking a litre of milk a day and a pound of cheese a week really did the trick. I eat rice (but not veru much of it) instead of bread, potatoes, and pasta, and for snacks I usually stick with fresh fruit and veggies 'cos I don't really trust a lot of the packaged foods here. So many preservatives! I might treat myself sometimes to some nuts or sunflower seeds, or Pocky sticks if I'm feeling really decadent. But I do eat a ton of Chinese food and I agree that it's a little oily, but overall it doesn't seem to tip the scale the wrong way!

heh, when i started my diet, i start eat potatos, pastas and bread , and, start loosing weight. of course, i do some excersizes. not as before, just sit in the office all the day till sleep. daily runs to market, does not really help, always gained weight. i had drink lot of coke and similar shit, thats also why ...
I always grow a winter coat and sweat it off in summer.
I lost weight, all the walking and (s)exercise. I wrecked my knee in China, never got better. Walking killed me. I came home to find I tore legiment and cartilage. I'm waiting to see a surgeon now, maybe 8 months just to talk to one.
Everyone lost weight but I became a fatass. What a ripoff.
I've lost weight since I went back to France though. I guess walking, not sitting down all the time and taking cabs all day, not having cheap food anywhere at any time, or having my body in motion in general helped.

Fine, I'll admit it, I haven't lost weight. I'm eating a pizza right now, with some Doritos and Orangina.
I have been here for nearly 15 months now and I have lost over 20 lbs!! I'm really happy about that! I do not know how I lost it since I drink so much beer over here and also I eat anything I want. It's great!! :)
Initially went from 80kg to 70kg in my first month here. It was a crazy hot August, walking everywhere, sweating continuously, and of course never having a solid shat. Since then I've bought a car and now get my exercise at a local gym (increased muscle mass instead of just sweating to the oldies). I've stabilized back up to around 75kg.
Back in the states now though....creeping up towards 80kg again, haha.
I came with 78 kg but lost 10 kg weight within 3 months due to heavy cycling and I am sorry to say that I am not found of Chinese food.
I came here 6 months ago at 115KG. At one point I was down to 94KG, but now I'm back up to 97KG, mostly because of all the mooncakes.
I don't understand how come anyone can lose weight in China! The food is oily, fried, and there are lots of food! When I came first time to China as a student in 2006 I gained 10 kilos during first 4-5 months. Before going back home, I lost 5, but since then my weight is bouncing all the time. And I can't get back into my 56 again.. :(
I've lost a little bit of weight in China, mainly due to all the extra walking/cycling I end up doing compared to back home where I have a car. Also falling in love with badminton and ping pong has helped shed a few pounds as well.
What little fat I had to lose, I have lost since coming to China. I drink less beer now, and even though I eat 3 square meals a day, I can't gain weight, and have never been able to.
I think I do sit-ups and push-ups in my sleep.
Also, I never have 'seconds', as I don't really like the food here.
I came to China a year ago weighing 260lbs and now I'm around 192lbs give or take. Most of that just fell right off and I only recently began going to the gym, cycling and swimming to tone up. My goal is 160. I know thats still a ton for a woman in china but it will seem pretty damn small to me, hehehehe.
Oh! And I basically eat tons and constantly. The difference here being that I always have fresh fruit, veggies and meat. I almost never eat carbs except about half a bowl of rice. I fill up with veggies and protean (meat and some variation of tofu). I absolutely LOVE chinese food and it never makes me feel tumescent or in a "food coma" like I always felt in the states (where btw buying fresh fruit and veggies every day was too expensive for me to do). Even with all the oil, I feel healthier than I ever did eating all the GMO crap, preservatives and additives in American food.
Sidicas:
This is also how I lost a lot of weight.
In the USA, junk food is much *MUCH* cheaper than healthy food. The poorer you are in the USA, the more obese and sick you're going to be.
I came here and couldn't believe how cheap all the vegetables and fruit was, so that's pretty much all I've been eating.
I gained 115lbs on coming to China (and married her). I also lost 200lbs on leaving England (fat bitch couldn't keep up and I gave her the slip at the airport).
I gained (even though I don't really think Chinese food is all that good) but I am losing it now ever since I found out RT mart has a vegetable section where you can make your own salad.

You make some good comments at times but why do you keep digging up two year old topics?
During first year in the Twilight Zone, I was insanely depressed. I quit running, and just ballooned. I probably actually wasn't huge, but I hated the feeling. It did not help the depression, at all.
Since I took running back up, I lost that weight, but probably would still be smaller in my country.
I was all good until the lady that owned my gym ran away with bags of money and closed the gym. After that I got fat - from drinking. Joined a gym 2 months ago and now I'm close to where I was.
Every time we visit Beijing, I lose some weight. The in-laws are big foodies and take us to restaurants twice a day. In general I do like Chinese food. There always seems to be that one gross thing on the table which affects my appetite, though.
- bee larvae lettuce wraps
- donkey (Eeyore!)
- sea cucumber
- cold soup made out of fungus, with some cloyingly sweet ingredients I couldn't figure out
-one time, when the weather was sweltering outside, the only thing to drink was *hot* thick date juice. No cold drink for you, crazy laowai!
The in-laws have decent table manners. We normally get a private room, but when we don't, the eating habits at nearby tables cause general nausea: spitting , heavy smoking, hawking and so on.
Last visit we decided to treat ourselves with lunch at Temple Restaurant, one of the nicest Western restaurants in BJ with wonderful service, even by international standards. Just as we were beginning to relax and enjoy the pampering, the Chinese family sitting next to us decided to change their baby's diaper right there on the banquette. WTF? I guess I should be glad they were not using split pants. Progress!
(no excuse because there were very clean bathrooms with comfortable benches.)
i was out of my comfort zone when i first arrived. i burned lots of calories from being stressed. my mom noticed on the webcam straight away.
when i settled into family life, comfortable life made me gain weight. i reached 110kg, but slowly dropping again.
back home, without job or apartment, i welcome the little bit of stress. i miss my kids, but by the time i see them again, hopefully i'll be leaner and fitter.
My weight fluctuates... basically depending on if I am "screw this I am going to snack out, drink and NOT go to the gym..." or the phase "enough is enough... I am going to eat healthy, go to the gym and do those sit-ups."
Right now I lost a lot of fast and decently lean cause I am more or less in the second phase. I hope to stay in it cause I feel so much better and things seemed much more balanced. Although I get a bit more cocky and arrogant with Chinese because my ego builds.
