Q: Did you hear about the Olympic badminton disqualifications?

8 players have been given the boot for purposely trying to lose. Leading the way was the #1 ranked team in the world....of course that was the honorable Chinese team. They did that to avoid playing the #2 ranked team, (also from China) until the medal round. Do you think they thought that the spectators present and the referees or umpires would turn a blind eye to that?

Is this "LOSING FACE 101"?

Yup, hilarious.

Although, Chinese media are actually reporting this at face value, and isn't looking to veil this in anti-China conspiracy theories. That's always that...

"the honorable Chinese team." LMAO!! lol lol. It's pathetic! :( Plus, look at all the folks that came from thousands of miles away and spent their hard-earned money, etc. to watch and instead were treated to this NONSENSE! :( The banned players ought to be ashamed of themselves! * The fans should be given prompt refunds of their tickets!! I went to the Summer Games in L.A. and nothing like this happened.

I think the problem was not losing but making it so laughably obvious and getting heckled and booed by the crowd.

-This was addressed as the fault of the system. There is a reason ping pong doesn't play like this. Groups don't work in team sports.

In the same vein I thought you guys might like this one. We have just seen on CCTV1 the news and their was a bit about this badminton match and also a bit about the young swimmer that took gold who I believe America is calling for a drug test. My wife is watching this and I happened to say that all competitors who fail testing should be kicked out and if a medal winner should have to hand the medal back. First of all she tries to say everyone does it so it's ok and then says that the Chinese team do not take drugs, all they have is some medicine because of a bad cold. Well she is Chinese so she should know, shouldn't she. So it is all official now China does not cheat with drugs but they do seem to have a lot of competitors with bad colds.

Sport used to be proud of the adage "it's the taking part that is important". Now it's a case of "win at all costs". Has money and national status destroyed this noble event completely?

Hugh.G.Rection:

I think the person you are  thinking of is Dwain Chambers a 100m sprinter and a good one too. He was caught using drugs in 2003 by the USA authorities, the resulting furore uncovered an organised drug use group and caught Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery too. Dwain Chambers he was given a two year ban from Athletics in accordance with IAAF guidelines and additionally in line with the British Olympic Committee's (BOC)own rules banned for life from the Olympics.

However, he took the BOC to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and against the wishes of the BOC had his lifetime ban from the Olympics overturned.  Basically the British rules were stricter than the International rules and so were overturned.

Personally I am of the opinion that anyone caught using illegal substances to increase their performance should be banned from ALL professional sports for life.

does anyone notice how these wumaos operate? they change the subject to talk junk about other countries. are you trying to say the us investigated and rooted out doping by their own athletes ? yes the usa still has some morals, we don't help our athletes dope up. I didn't attack America, I listed some facts, if you managed to read you would have noticed I was backing the British Olympic Committee's stance for a lifetime ban that was overturned by an INTERNATIONAL ruling body.

Lokethebloke, I would appreciate it if in future you wouldn't edit your post after I've replied, or at least not to the extent that it is now a totally different post to the one you first posted. It leads to the confusion we see here.

Your original post was commenting on a British Athlete who had been banned for using drugs then allowed back in to the games, hence my comment about "I think you meant Dwain Chambers"

That was nothing, the big controversy occurred during the Paralympics 'blind football match' this afternoon. The game played with a number of bells inside the ball was much anticipated as the spacial awareness of the players is a magical thing to behold. Problems arose however when the German team, who were set to play Italy in the final, failed to turn up. Fears of foul play were later put to rest when it was discovered they'd boarded the wrong bus, ended up in Wolverhampton, and were found kicking the shit out of a group of performing Morris Dancers.

  More news at 11.

lokethebloke:

Fantastic, I love it.   Lol.

Apparently questions are now being asked about a 15 year old Latvian girl in swimming and the whole British cycling team.   Journalists have to earn a crust I suppose !   What is their drug of choice?

Simply put....this badminton scandal was the biggest mass disqualification in Olympic history with 4 countries involved. China lead the way as we all know.  It cannot be justified in any way so guys please, stop deflecting and drawing analogies to other years and instances. You are welcome to start another thread if you wish  to engage in that.

crimochina:

it is one thing the cheat in order to try and win. but it is a completely different story to throw games but chinese people simply do not understand it. they are comparing it to doping, teams using their subs in a blow out , swimmers conserving their strength in the prelims. and it is funny to see 2 "brits" argue the same points that the chinese are making. completely missing the point that these athletes were throwing a match which  is the greatest and biggest violation sports. (wumaos you wanna knock america google the blacksox scandal, and you will understand that throwing games is a real big deal)

also it is funny they are crying about having the chinese have to play each other but they completely ignore the fact that everyone has to at some point play each other the seeding is done according to rankings or random (never factoring in country)

some people have lost what the olympics are all about its not about winning medals (even though it is plus) but a place where all countries gather together to put aside differences, war, and everything else.

As in the movie cool runnings it says: Derice, a gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without one, you'll never be enough *with* one.

derek:

In this day and age, sadly the Olympics, like so many other "special events" have become about the almighty dollar.  The product placement (and I don't mean advertising) in these games is staggering if you care to take notice. Bought and paid for though.

That's where we are in the world.

i guess you could say its unsportsmanlike like but if they didnt break any rules i dont think they should be disqualified, look at what happened when floyd mayweather was boxing the guy head but him  and later floyd took advantage of the rules and hit the guy as soon as the reff said fight before the guy had a chance to put up his hands, most people said it was a suker punch but it states in the rules that you should protect yourself at all times but im sure if the guy didnt head but him he wouldn't resort to this

mArtiAn:

Yeh, I haven't followed two minutes of Olympics yet but I agree, if they weren't breaking any rules, how can they be disqualified?

crimochina:

what planet are you on? how can  you compare this to floyd maywether? oh and by the way it is against the rules. no 3. something you chinese always overlook, fans pay a lot of money to see two sides "compete" . sports is not the wwe. if the 2 sides are trying to lose then the fans were ripped off. you are too caught up in your lieing cheating and scamming = intelligence. in the real world that does not apply. customers in other countries are not dumb sheep doing what their parents and govt tells them to do. they will spend their $ elsewhere. which is why it is against the rules. but the team could have forefeited the match, and not try to screw over the fans. but chinese culture "hehe i am smarter than you" comesback to bite them in the ass.

my bad didnt know it was against the rules, they was badly critisized with all this Olympic bullshit this is why i compared it to floyd since he didnt break the rules and was made to look like a cheater, and tbh i dont give  a crap bout the fans since the government sold majority of the tickets to tourist, most people where pissed of that they couldnt see an event that was being hosted in their own country, im not really bothered since ive been away from london for a year now

Why even bother to watch a sport if the participants are not going to do their honest best to win? I honestly see no difference between the athlete who dopes up to win and the athlete who chooses to lose on purpose.

mArtiAn:

Well in terms of following the rules, getting doped up is against them. But as stan118 suggested, throwing a game is not against the rules. Or is it?

Hugh.G.Rection:

Throwing a game is against the rules, the international body that covers Badminton states that all players must make every effort to win, or words to that effect. That is the rule they got kicked out for.

International players have more than just the 'basic' rules of the game they play that they must obey.
