On the 23 day of the twelve lunar month, Chinese pay tribute and offer gifts to the Kitchen God, so when he goes to Heavens and reports on your activities during the current ending year, he will present a favorable report. Did you follow tradition?. It is not really a holiday, city dwellers do not do it as often as years ago, still done on countyry side. In northen China is done on the 23rd day, in Southern China is done on the 24th day.
Were you aware of this? WHAT OFFERINGS DID YOU MAKE?
"Chinese pay tribute and offer gifts to the Kitchen God, so when he goes to Heavens and reports on your activities during the current ending year, he will present a favorable report."
It's really nice to know that there is a long standing traditation that you must bribe the inspector so you'll get a better report.
So is he in charge of reporting all my activities or just the ones that happen in the kitchen? Since I didn't know to "pay" him, then does he get you in trouble for unwed sex, or is it ok as long as you don't do it on his kitchen counters?
HappyExPat:
Well DaBen, he is in charge of reporting ALL your activities. But if you put out a Good Show in or near the kitchen, and he enjoyed it, I am sure he will give you an A+ in his report. Now since he is in Heavens, his image will be removed from Chinese kitchens until after New Year day, so take the opportunity to even have more fun......
DaBen:
So you get like a free pass during these days he's busy reporting in heaven? I would think more hell would break loose if you give this many people that long of a period without supervision.
No, I was not aware of this, but wondered why I had the urge around that time to do strange things with butter and whipped cream in the kitchen...
I don't worship the kitchen god so there would be a point in me giving the kitchen god an offering. There is only one god for me so all others I would not follow anyways. I never heard of this it could be made up...
Everyday I burn something as kitchen offering. I ruin more teflon pans. My GFs teach me this. They can not cook. I tell them it is all good, carbon is a major food group. Kitchen sex is good. This is where the chocolate sauce is kept. Sometime jam is good, I like double fruit half the sugar. Don't get me started on poultry subject or cooking oil (cold never hot)
It really surprises me that a person of obvious Chinese ancestry, will have the balls to say that the Kitchen God "could be made up ".
Doesn't he knows HIS cultural and traditions around Spring Festival ? Does he know that from at least one week to ten days prior to the coming of the new year, there is a day dedicated to many different activities, among those the Kitchen God ? And for two wreeks after, there are also many activities proper of each day, ending with Lantern Festival ?.
I will not enlighten him, if he wants to know, he can Google for it. It is pittyfull that a laowai knows more than a local about China.
HugAPanda:
Happy Happy Happy. He has to do that so he can convince us he's American, NCer, USAFer, etc. Of course he's going to denounce the kitchen god!
HappyExPat:
I do try hard to ignore him, I feel that if enough rope is given to him, he will end up hanging himself. But this time he really got me with his comment that the Kitchen God could be a "made up" story by me. Well, on with the show, enough time wasted already.
