Q: Do any of you watch the Chinese New Year variety show on CCTV 1?
I suspect that some of you (especially those of you with Chinese partners) are now sitting down with the family and watching the Chinese New Year's variety show on CCTV 1 (and just about every other channel). Does anyone get the jokes? What's it about? Do any of you enjoy it?
We have Satellite TV
so the house is full of Chinese

I was in a McDonald's chomping on a McDouble when I heard the opening flute of "My Heart Will Go On" being sung on CCTV1. I nearly choked on the cultural intercourse.
I told my wife I'd do the first 1/2 hour, the magic, and Zhao Benshan. And anything that might be cool. So far cool has been taken to mean Celine Dion, that Celine Dion is cool is common misconception is Asia, and Kungfu, which was pretty cool. For real though, its +5 hours long. That's a little much if your Chinese is as limited as mine.

Hey, Zhao Benshan appeared on Liaoning TV, I missed most of the show, but got a glimpse of it at the end. That guy is awesome! He is my favorite Chinese comedian.

Was it the Liaoning New Years Gala that typically airs the night before the National News Years Gala or the National New Years Gala? Anyway, could find a link to it on youku.com for me? I hate to ask, but you owe me for pointing out that middle eastern joint. Plus it'd make my wife really happy.

I watched it in the evening as part of the new year Gala,
But as I found out the show first aired the night before new year (feb, 08 2013)
Yeah they brought over that Chinese comedian from the states. It's kind of ironic/funny that they brought him over for the show this year. Last year they brought him over the Chinese people didn't think he was funny. They couldn't understand his jokes. Even while I was watching the program a couple of guys in the audience looked really confused.
Celine Dion just sang "My heart will go on' and a Chinese song with another singer. A duo!
I'm not watching it now but I did see the Kung Fu/ Shaolin acrobatics being displayed. That was interesting!
I'm watching it right now with wifeybuns. I'm actually really enjoying the backgrounds and the art. I can't understand too much of it, but I'm enjoying it. She's really happy, laughing, smiling and having fun... after being really depressed for a while over the situation with her parents, so I'm definitely thankful for this show.
I watched it once and I hated it. Eight year old girls tarted up in lipstick. Made me sick.

Zhao benshan appeared in Liaoning show,This year, his show was not much appealing. Maybe that is the reason why he did not go to CCTV1 show.

I think part of its appeal for her is that he and his part of the show, which is usually the last one before midnight, are a cultural institution.
God no, I can't even stand shit like that in my own language.
When I realized what it was I got up, went to the fridge, grabbed a cold beer, turned the TV off, drank the beer, drank a few more, called a couple of buddies and went out drinking. Got to the pub and the damn thing was on the freakin big screen! I turned my chair around and got drunk.

I think foreigners cannot understand our folk music still even though you guys have lived in China for years. Therefore, you cannot enjoy the show.

I understand the "music". What's there not to understand? It's MUSIC!!
My opinion is that I just do not find it interesting. Celine Dion is a Canadian and even that didn't peak my interest. It's as simple as that. In Canada I do not have to like so called Canadian music, or American music.... or any other country's music. I like particular types of music and some artists are cool but nobody can tell me that I don't understand Chinese music therefore I cannot enjoy the show.

Oh, and well done with the all-emcompassing, "Foreigner" reference. Give your head a shake, man!
I want to say western music is similar,like Canadian music and American music. I mean do you like singer like Song zuying. you might not appreciate her style. Her song is folk music, not pop music.

Why do you have such a need to group non-Chinese people together with a single moniker such as foreigner, expat or westerner? When I say something about Chinese people I directly say, the Chinese (yes, I know it is a generalization too but not as near as general as foreigner).

If I want to generalize Non-chinese, what word I should use? Usually, foreigners just means westerners. I mean there is a huge gap between culture, the word foreigners do not include Korean, Vietnam and other Asian countries which have be influenced by Chinese culture.
