Q: Do baby showers exist in China?

Do friends or relatives offer gifts of some sort when a couple have a baby?

A 'baby shower' is a small party where you give gifts to a pregnant woman expecting a baby soon. Usually things the baby needs, like clothes and such. Hey, look at that, actually being helpful instead of laughing.

Yes to both.  Gifts of baby related objects or cash are offered to the mother, but keep in mind that a new mother must be in bed, and no allowed out of it for any reason for one month after birth.  So, even if you visit, do not feel bad if you do not see them.

And also yes to baby showers, I have been invited to two in 18 months here.  Mostly like a wedding banquet, with gifts of cash in red envelopes, or cribs, carts, lots of pamper looking packages, clothes, even powered milk.  And a 8 course meal, plenty to drink, and everyone drunk at the end.

Since I am working in an IS, we do baby shower as most of us are foreigners. Our chinese collegues enjoy them as much as we do.

I believe you can introduce this customs to your chinese friends. I bet they will like it!smiley

I have not seen a baby shower but what I have seen is this, like Happy writes, when the baby is born, all of the friends give little red envelopes, and depending upon the degree of friendship, the money increases accordingly.

Additionally, the father of the newborn traditionally distributes little presents to all of his friends to celebrate the birth of the child.
