Q: Do Chinese cellphones work outside China?

Years ago, I was told that cellphones bought in China don't work in other countries (the phone itself, not the SIM). Since I'll be going back to France, and that I'm too lazy to buy a new one, will I be able to just insert the new sim card in my current phone, and rock n roll?

They work just fine if you swap out the SIM card.  Albeit my only experience with this was with a Sony Ericsson phone.  It might be an issue if you have a Chinese brand phone.

Of course this is assuming you bought an unlocked phone here.

If the phone is quad banded it will work. frequency bands: 850 and 1900 MHz, used in Canada and the United States, and the common 900 and 1800 MHz bands.

The 2G GSM standard is a kind of globally implemented ("Works all over the world and in most parts of New Jersey", as PK put it).  Might need quadband as mentioned above.

Be careful with 3G capabilities though. Only China Unicom splashes big on imported and expensively licensed equipment to provide the WCDMA service typical in the western world. All other Chinese networks use 3G standards that are somewhat exotic out there.

From my experiences it does....wouldn't see what the problem would be. Phones are meant to be universal it's not like you need to use a certain type of plug socket to use it and if you did you could get those universal plug sockets to charge your phone if that is the case.

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
