Is it customary for Chinese companies - foreign, private, local or government - to trust offerings they find on the web and try them out? Or is this idea totally novel?

Chinese companies do all the business they can face-to-face. It's part of building the guanxi that makes the country run. If they just remain faceless internet connections then both parties spend a lot of time just assuming the other party is trying to cheat them.

Yes that makes sense - most cultures would be like that. This may be a totally clueless question, but I'll ask it anyway: If you can meet someone face-to-face via Skype, is guanxi possible? There are many Western companies using Skype. At mine, we have 95% of dealings via Skype audio + video. We can see each other, we can call for free, and it's all online. I spoke via Skype with a language student in China - I could see and hear him perfectly. Any ideas? Thanks.
