Q: Do Chinese ever call the police when they see a thief ?
Many apartments have bars on the windows to keep thieves out. Thieves and pickpockets seem to be every where. My girl friend had her batteries stolen from her scooter. I asked her don't the people who always seem to watch every move you make call the police? Of course I can't get answer. What does the average person do when they see someone stealing?

Usually if they get a bonofide criminal there's a mob beat down.
Yep. Fear of retaliation is the thing I hear from my wife all the time. I have seen the results of such retaliation so I can tell you it is very real. Granted, it only happens a small fraction of the time, but that is enough to keep people too scared to report anything.

Just the other day a motor bike rider got taken out by a very big Bloke who simply just ran into the side of the rider
the poor guy on the bike went ass up and was not in a good way and the other guy just kept running
I called the ambulance and did what I could till help arrived
the big guy comes back with a knife trying to get the witnesses to leave before the cops got there
Me and another man ended up doing security to stop things getting worse

No, they don't. As other people have pointed out, its because of fear of reprisal. The Chinese have a saying for this, open one eye and close the other.
Also, this post is making me miss numbers in a strange sort of way. I half expected her to be in here telling us what hell holes western cities are though made up stories about places she's obviously never been. It just isn't the same without that terrible lying shill around.

No, that's not good enough. I want stories about being brutally mugged outside of her $10 million Manhattan co-op. I want stories about middle class office workers and Grandmothers getting gunned down by hill-billy neo-nazi outside of suburban strip malls on every odd numbered Tuesday or Thursday in a month. I think she wasn't very smart. She was supposed to log onto a site for expats in America, pretend to be a Chinese expat in America, then say all that crap propaganda there. That would have made alot more sense.
They will either film it with their phones and either keep it (to show their friends) or post it or do nothing at all.
Either way, they will not help the victim.

My brother-in-law had his scooter stolen last night......... I mentioned police and he laughed ......... going to buy another one today, gotta get to work somehow.
2 bikes last week from where he lives and 4 last night.
Sure glad I got them lazy, some say useless, security guys around my place.

the problem about not reporting it to the police... sure the police will not be able to find a stolen scooter and it will certainly not be prioritized particularly high, but if not reported it can never get to any kind of crime statistics, without statistics you can never figure out if there is a need for improving public safety or where.

Agree with you guys. Those security guys don't have very good reputation. I remember they told a friend of mine not to bring his new and expensive bike inside the building, then it was stolen the very first time he locked it outside the building. What a coincidence!
