Q: Do Chinese neighbours complain about noise more easily than in the West?

I went to a very tame house party this week, during which the neighbours knocked on the door on two occasions to complain about the noise . The music wasn't even on full-blast and it was only 11pm. I found it odd, since I hear my neighbours fighting and screaming all the time and another set of neighbours redecorating their flat using a hammer drill at all hours of the day.

Maybe they think that western people should shut up when they do this. They have been watching too many movies or something and think it's okay to do this! or maybe you are playing too many english songs and it is driving them crazy Wink

That's absolutely bizarre. Usually it's been the opposite, with Chinese neighbours screaming and playing Mahjong till 3-4 AM on a weeknight.

I can't even imagine a Chinese person complaining about noise. You just blew my mind.

The only complaint I ever had was in my girlfriend's tiny hutong where the walls are basically almost as thin as cardboard (I am freezing right now), we were playing Wii with the sound really loud, and laughing, and the next day the old lady next door asked us to stop making noise late at night. But they also wake up at 4 am and start doing whatever old people do that makes such a huge fucking racket, so now it's on.

In Guilin, I had one of those hot/cold air conditioners which in winter are a life saver. Anyway, during the night, my neighbors would constantly fight and shout at all hours of the night, but if I turned on my A/C before midnight they would c omplain!  Once they even shut off my energy!  So, this went on until every time they fought, I would call the police (I would not specify it ws a husband-wife fight). Eventually we left each otehr alone.
