Q: Do Chinese people get tired easier than we do?

The answer of course is yes they do. So the question I guess is why?

Shoes.

the number of people who wear inappropriate / poorly made 'fashionable' shoes leads to tiredness.

I have seen girls climb mountains (and complain how tired they are) in high-heel shoes. angry

If my feet are tired, i am tired so i wear comfortable shoes - 'fashion' be damned.

i can not find any comfortable shoes in China, so i bring my own.

the result is that i can function for a lot longer than the 'fashionable' girls

icnif77:

I 'live' in shoes on average 8h/day, hence '100% leader', very often 'hand-made shoes' are my only choice.

In China, I never step into the shoe store.

This is a strong generalization, but the answer is yes. The why has several answers, pick your favorite

 - Because Chinese bodies are different

 - Because the Government supports lunch time napping to make sure any revolting citizens would at least stop revolting for 1-2 hours per day to get their nap.

I always thought that it was less a physical thing, and more of a cultural immunity to shame. Westerners get tired all the time, but would be ashamed to goof off on the job because of it. Chinese, not so much. In their minds, if someone is even diligent enough to ask them why they didn't do something, they will just lie, anyway.

Yeah i've noticed this too. I think theres a few reasons

1. It's a softball culture, like Rachel said it's kinda embarrassing in the west to act like you're tired and can't do basic activities. Didn't play sports or had a coach yelling at them to tough it out. It's not a tough it out kinda place.

2. Lack of initiative. Theres nothing that tells me somebody is lame faster than them wanting to nap all the time. I have downtime at work too and I read or post comments on the internet like a winner. Losers don't seek stimulation but just see that time to power down.

3. I always thought Chinese culture is all about individual compensation for collective inadequacy. Very few people in China are empowered enough to control their environment to where they can reliably sleep through the night. So they compensate for it by training themselves to just sleep/rest wherever they can get it. Same reason I think they're so fussy about germs, they promote a filthy country through their collective habits, but individually they're all polly pocket when it comes to touching food.

I would get all psychological and chalk it up to oppression, hopelessness, and defeatism. But I have to admit your observations have more merit.

The health, hygiena & sport culture is different from what you can see in some other parts of the world. I've seen the same thing in other places : in Asia in general, at least.

Doing sport in a regular fashion is not that common, it's for city wealthy people who have free time : a small category. A large majority of people moved out of the farm one or two generation ago, with no notion of "doing physical activity is good for you". Like in the countryside, free time is do-nothing time... So there's, lots of people are not quite as fit as they could be. And top it of, there's not much pride there in being fit, just being thin (which is a wholly different thing). Flappy buttocks all over the place ^^

Also, because anybody feel free to ask something anytime and with little privacy, it might be hard to have a regular 8 hours straight of sleep.

expatlife26:

Yeah I agree completely. Living a rural life full of exertion you don't feel compelled to go and lift weights and hit the treadmill.

Also it's not as though I think showing tons of initiative really gets you anywhere here.

I feel such pity for people who don't have enough control over their lives to get consistent sleep. It's not like they're at war or anything and need to march all the time or defend the marne. They just don't know how to live, plain and simple.

Because their live's are much ado about nothing.

And doing nothing begets tiredness.

Think of the babum babum of the train.  That's Chinese life right there.

And everyone is happy with status quo.

Take right now....I look out the window and see almost no one.  Becuase it's nap time.

And lo, they will finally nod off and out of this mortal coil.  Having achieved nothing.

It's one of the powerful and mysterious Chinese powers.

It allows them to sleep anywhere, anytime in any position. Another mystical power they have is taking something very simple and making it amazingly complicated.

Also, they get up pretty early compared to most foreigners... like 5am - 6am (this is the excuse they will use but don't be fooled)... they are tired most of the day... plus they are a pretty lazy... and unmotivated people overall.

I'm talking too about going out at night. Whereas we generally have the ambition to go out and have fun after work on a Friday night, maybe deep into the night. Most Chinese, even young people, are just content to stay at home. If they are invited, they will often they say they are tired

that's what I assumed when I first came here, but after being here some time it seems to check out. On the weekend people generally go home and rest. Everybody's not just avoiding me dude. I'm pretty sure. Thanks tho

Taking a simple sample of wechat moments you can clearly see that most people stay up until at least 2am every night, often later. On the weekend, staying up until at least daylight is common.

As another piece of evidence to this thoroughly scientific study, next time you wake up in the wee hours to strain the potatoes, have a look out your window at how many lights are still on. Either they are afraid to sleep with the lights off or are awake playing computer games or mahjong, wechatting, eating or watching something fascinating on tv.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
