Q: Do foreign debit cards work with Chinese ATMs?

Are there any problems with using foreign debit/credit cards in China?  Which ATMs should be avoided?  Any advice regarding foreign debit/credit cards in China?

Not all ATM's in China will allow the usage of foreign debit/credit cards.  It can often be a case of hit-and-miss.  For example, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank will accept and do a transaction with a foreign debit / credit card.  Citic Bank the same -- but not all branches.  The Merchants' Bank, the same but again not all branches.  For the Big 4, not every ATM will accept a card -- it's case-by-case.

It depends on where your debit card was issued and what system it uses.  For example, in Canada, the major debit system is interac.  I can use my Canadian issued debit card at any ATM in USA or anywhere where the interac logo is displayed .  In China I think the major system is unionpay.  I've used my BOC issued debit card in HK and in the Philippines.  If your debit card has the unionpay logo on it, it will work at any ATM that displays the unionpay logo, regardless of the bank or location.  Of course, you'll have to pay any service charges and exchange rate losses.

yes foreign debit cards  works here in China, just take care of one thing..

before inserting your Debit card..just double check that - a particular ATM machine support Visa/master card or not.(Every ATM machine does not support).

generally it has been mentioned by putting the logo of Visa and Master on or around a ATM machine

Yes, but only in certain banks. I had a Bank of America debit card which was supposed to work in the agricultural bank of China but it did not work. The only bank that it would work in was the Bank of China. This was in Nanning. If you are in Beijing etc you will just have to try your card. Bank of China is your best bet. Franck3

It depends on which card you have and which city you are in. Bank of America only worked in Bank of China in Nanning (3,000,000) population. In Beijing it worked in the Banks displaying the Logos on the back of the card. I now have a city Bank card, I will try it on my next visit. Franck3
