Q: Do foreigners go to the beer festivals in China?

I think pretty much every big city in China has one of these every year, but for some reason all I imagine it being is hordes of middle-aged Chinese men getting drunk eating crap food.

Has anyone been to one of these and vouch for them being interesting or worth heading to?

I use to go to the one in Dalian, it had a lot of great beers to choose from and for the most part it was a fun atmosphere.

However, I would recommend against it because every year I went there were at least a dozen stories of Chinese guys ganging up and beating the crap out of foreigners, especially the foreigners who brought along a Chinese girl as a date.  There was even one case where the foreign guy was beaten unconscious and his girlfriend (it was their first date) was gang raped and then beaten into a coma.

Personally, I have never had any problems at these events, but you do need to be extra careful.

So you've heard dozens of stories, did you see any of this happening?   What would you say to your students if they come to you with 'stories'?

A more blatant piece of hostile rumour mongering I have yet to read here.   I hope you got a little more than the usual 50 cents for this one.

Xpat.John:

2 of my friends were beaten at the Dalian beer festival.  One of them had 2 broken ribs and needed over 20 stitches for cuts he got from a bottle that he was slashed with.  I don't tell 'stories' without at least some base in reality.  So, you good troll, can fuck off.

You are a rude person. Not quite the same story as your more dramatic first post. "I don't tell 'stories' without at least some base in reality" does that mean that your stories are not quite true, embellished perhaps, you have been economical with the truth?.

Within 2 paragraphs you called me a liar, rumor monger, government shill and an English teacher.  And I am the rude one?  I give respect where respect is due and by your comments, I do not see that any was due.

I am well connected to the communities I live in, so I hear a lot of stories from both locals and expats, that is where much of my information comes from.  I do not take information fed to me from children or drunkards but from sources I deem as credible.  If you do not wish to believe the things I say, that is your prerogative.  However, if you expect me to just take your insults and not say anything, then you are mistaken.

I have not called you anything, I have insinuated these things, I have no proof.   Just as I suggest that you have no proof in your 'stories'.

I could tell you stories of violence and debauchery at many of the wonderful beer festivals that I have attended in quite a few countries around the world but they are isolated incidents caused by an over consumption of ale.   I can't understand why you had to throw in the story in such a negative way.         I'm just holding up a mirror.

Xpat.John:

Insinuations are nothing more than a passive-aggressive form of accusations.

There are good and bad things happening every day everywhere in the world.  But to think that a foreigner can walk into an area with thousands of drunk locals and not have to be careful of their surroundings is just complete naievete, bordering on reckless disregard for their own safety.

You say/insinuate/whatever semantics you wish to use, that I am lying and fear mongering.  I am simply relaying information that has been relayed to me.  Proof, like opinions are subjective.  Nothing I have said is changed from the way it was told to me.

I do not wish to get into a petty battle of words with you or any other person. You don't believe me.  Fine.  I can respect the image I see in a mirror even if you can not.

Try Qingdao or Shenzhen Beer International Festival. Qingdao is a seaside in east China, and Shenzhen is a Special Economic Zone in south China. There you may meet many foreigners from different countries.
